That Wax Question

Works for me! And as president, your first task should be to get this wonderful word added to the dictionary so I can tell all of my friends “I told you so”!

I’ll be the Seargent-at-Arms.

We’ll review submissions on a case by case basis…

This message is for SDSTAFF Jill:

In your 19-Jun-2001 response to the question about surfboard wax, you use
the word gription. which you then refer to as a word you made up. Well, my
wife made up that word about 10 years ago, and I have been using it ever
since. She was describing something, and both the words grip and friction
would have fit into the context, and it came out gription. We are no longer
married, but I still use that word often.

I am not disputing the fact that you spontaneously came up with this word on
your own. I am merely pointing out that the word has been coined by at
least one other person, and at least one other person uses it. If the word
were ever to make it into the dictionary, your use of it would probably be
cited, since it is the first time I have seen it in print.

I find it very amusing to see that word that I have used for so long showing
up in such a highly regarded place as The Straight Dope.

(I’ve been using it for over 25 years… just sayin’ - Jill)

Phrase coinage and inflation

So, the debate rages on who was the first to use Gription in print. But I think Jill has come up with something in “Are you supposed to wax the top or the bottom of the surfboard?” that is even better.

She said, “apply a thick coat of wax, then you can rough it up to improve gription even more, using a rubber comb designed for this purpose (this comb is also used for removing wax from the board…).” So, I think she must at least hold the record for the most verbose use of “wax on, wax off”.

Pb (who can’t believe he registered JUST to post this).

Stitches said something about the angled foam pads that people usually use on the rear of the board. A new totally revolutionary idea came out a few years back by a company called Astrodeck. They make booties out of neoprene, wetsuit material, and attach velcro to the soles. Then you cover the deck with a velcro like material for an effect that is stickier than any wax.

Astrodeck makes it so surfers can do crazy aerobatic moves that would never be possible without. Alot of old school surfers can’t stand Astrodeck and will laught you off the beach, like if you show up a Log Cabin’s(da best surf in da world!). It gives surfers a totally unfair advantage in the water and has been banned from all major competitions.

Personally, I’ve never tried Astrodeck. I don’t have any qualms. It would probably be alot of fun.
