That's DEFINITELY not how it's spelled.

Syzygyz…
Irregardless, it’s better too have posted you’re thoughts then not. I shutter to think what some peoples’ speling and language would of ben like otherwise.
Definatley.

Could someone enlighten me as to how the phrase “try and <do something>” got started? It makes no sense. It’s like the little green guy said, you either do or you don’t - there is no try.

Example: I’m going to try and go to the movies.

Well, no, either you’re going to try to go to the movies - or you’re going to go to the movies - but the act of trying implies the chances of failure, and thus “and go to the movies” makes no sense because it isn’t guaranteed.

You should say “I’m going to try to go the movies.”

Ah well, just a pet peeve of mine.

Darn right! I catch errors like that with my periphial vision.

boys have happiness, girls have angina

Yeah, that bothers me almost as much as when people put “quotes” around words and phrases “for no particular reason.”

And then there’s “alot”… alot of what? Salty wife?
I think s’not.

Hey, how about people who use too much punctuation??? I hate that!!! Don’t you!!??!?!

The Osco near my house had a Re-Grand Opening sign up for two months. I kept asking the clerks when the first Grand Opening was.

Their are so manny of these common spelling error’s that I don’t even notice them anymore.

Hi. It is I, Coldfire.

I do this all the time. Definately. Yup. In all honesty? Until I read the OP, I did NOT know it was a misspelling. My good friend Shayna once told me about definitely, but I think the concencus was that both spellings were OK (or maybe that’s in my head, don’t blame her!).

But hey! I gots and excuse. I ain’t spoken English all mine live. Its youse guys’ vault fore overexcpocing me too you’re mispelings. Fuc you al.

FWIW, I consider myself to be an above-average speller,* and I had been spelling that word “definately” my entire life until about four years ago, when my wife noticed it. (She has really bad spelling which I always make fun of and considered it a serious victory to be able to point my spelling mistake out to me).

Ever since then I’ve noticed how much people spell that word wrong. Was there ever a time in which both spellings were acceptable? I’m starting to believe that we were all taught the wrong spelling in grade school. No wait - it’s the SDMB’s fault!!! Goat fuckers!!
*[sub]Before you all go running off to find spelling errors in my other posts, I make no such claims about my typing abilities. :D[/sub]

::head explodes::

I am definately guilty of this one. That’s my “word,” the word I can never spell right, and always question myself about.
It’s an “a”…no, it’s an “i”…yeah, I know it’s “i”…right? No, it’s “a”…right? Hmm, “definitely” or definately? Both ways look right…arrgghh!

Definitely.

Bwaaa haaa haaa haaa haaa!

[ul][sub]Did I spell that right? [/sub][/ul]

My hangnail’s got puss coming out of it.

I don’t think its a mispelling contest we have hear, people.

I’ve always spelled if definetly… come to think of it, I don’t think I even know how I spell it normally!

And I think you meant “consensus.”

This is all about me, isn’t it?

God, I am sooo embarrassed.

This is all so silly. It’s really besides the point.
