That's "fire"

You’re all sick.

(That’s a good thing, isn’t it?)

My unhipness is truly vast. Never heard of lowkey, fire, fetch, or mood as explained above.

But my zoot suit has a reet pleat.

This one’s a joke, from the movie “Mean Girls”.

Or then there’s the usage “I lowkey think that Tom Hiddleston is totally hot”.

But thanks, it hadn’t occurred to me that it referred to a dirty little secret.

Pretty sketchy, if you ask me.

“Fire” is on fleek.

The (ersatz) creators of “Fyre Festival” asked all their investors to promote the use of “Fyre” as a synonym for "Great"or “Wonderful” in social media. I want to say that was 2016-ish? Anyway it caught on in certain circles despite the festival turning out to be an absolute boondoggle.

Now, when I hear someone say “That’s fire” all I hear is “It’s probably fraudulent.”

Far longer than that.

Just looked it up on Urban Dictionary and the top definition stems from 2007.

Urban Dictionary: Thats Fire.

As for fire, #4 definition comes from 2005

Well, that explains why my resident experts don’t know it. It’s so five minutes ago.

sounds totally mexico and well futile!

And a drape shape?

In the early 2000s I happened to meet a guy who was really into beatboxing. I have no interest in Hiphop or beatboxing or anything like that - I’m a rock and blues guy.

He was running a forum for beatboxers, and was having some technical issues, so I helped him out by restoring and rebuilding the database.

Sometime later, I helped him migrate the entire forum to a new hosted service - there was a fair amount of technical work involved, and we finally cut over the DNS entry on a friday evening.

About an hour later, I’m monitoring the server stats, it’s looking real chill, hit the equivalent of ATMB, and am faced with

This new server is really sick!!!

I have about 10 minutes of panic, looking in the logs, checking the indexes, making sure the forums are all there and loading, when it dawns on me …

Someone much younger than myself was just really impressed, and there wasn’t an issue to sort out …

When I was a kid, we had slang terms that literally only belonged to our school. We’d insult people by calling them a “dry” or a “barry”. Thinking back on it, it was quite amazing to witness.

(chuckle)

I had no idea that usage was that old! I’ve only been aware of it for maybe 3 or 4 years. Seems like by the time certain phrases get down to the common shlubs like me, it’s passé by a decade.

Early 2000s? We’re pushing 20 years!!! I think I’m gonna be sick.

Can I still say “cool?”

I have literally been using fire, low key, vibing and living your best life, for decades as they are all very common vernacular in the black community.

I am torn between being annoyed that white folks have inevitably appropriated more of my culture with no attribution and being annoyed that black people are still so separated from white people that white people can literally go decades without ever having encountered these bits of common slang that are used all over the country.

You can, but you have to pronounce it properly. You should never make it a multi-syllable word (“kewel”) but say it with a dark-Ł so that is sounds almost like “coo’”. Any other pronunciation is, well, uncool.

I’d argue that it was because it was such a disaster that the word caught on.

Personally, I would have never known of the existence of Fyre Festival had it gone off with out a hitch.

“This thread is so crash!”
DC Comics’ Impulse

That idiot “Fyre Festival” was SO wrong on so many levels, I would have thought “Fyre” (with the dingaling spelling) would have become another euphenism for the infamous f-word.
