I’m 62. After reading everyone’s posts I have a few that others mentioned and a few that they didn’t.
Suit - I have a black one and a grey one for formal events. Currently in style but I don’t mind being the old guy in out-of-style clothes if needed.
CDs - over 1,000 in the basement but only players are in the cars. Love being able to ask Alexa or Google to play a song and it immediately starts playing. My wife buys CDs/merch at concerts to support artists though.
Vinyl records - again a basement full but nothing to play them on. The kids have players and buy them. I’ll leave my collection to them when I go.
Motorcycles - with the way everyone drives these days, road bikes are too dangerous and my body can’t take dirt bikes / off-roading.
Firearms - no longer hunt and what I have is plenty for target shooting and home defense.
Camping gear - still hike a lot but no desire to sleep on the ground anymore (and even more importantly neither does my wife).
Bicycles - I ride quite a bit for health but have a good bike that should last me the rest of my life. Have to get new tires, chain, etc. every year or two but the bike should outlast me. My wife has an e-bike so she can ride with me. I might have to get an e-bike if we keep riding later in life.
Books - haven’t bought a book in years. Love to read and prefer paper over electronic, but our local library shares books with all the libraries within a couple hundred miles. All I do is request a book and within a week or two it’s delivered to my local, small town library.
A watch. I could end up with another one, as the battery in my trusty Timex will die at some point. I don’t wear it; it’s just on my bedside table so I know when it’s morning. I haven’t worn a watch since I retired in 2008.
Books: I read on my Kindle, so I guess technically I’m buying books, just not the paper kind.
Tools of any kind. I sold all my big woodshop tools when we moved, and recently gave all of my hand tools and smaller power tools to my grandson. No need for any of it, as I have no place to work. There may be the odd kitchen tool from time to time. My latest one was a laser thermometer, which I was meaning to buy for some time. Very handy. But unless something gets damaged, no more kitchen tools.
I own bunch of watches but exclusively wear my Garmin since it’s also my step tracker (as well as HR, & other stuff recorder). I’m sure I’ll buy another recording watch at some point but I doubt I’ll buy another regular one.
Jesus dude. We all know how this “joke” was originally framed fifty years ago. At any time in the last few decades was that verbiage on a box of tampons? For a lot of reasons you should really retire that one. It’s a bad look for an older man.
I got an air-conditioner (had to retire the roof-top Swamp cooler) and replaced the furnace at the same time. If they don’t last the rest of my life, I’ve lived too long.
Interesting. I’ve generally found that a replacement battery, even including having the place put it in, costs a whole lot less than an even halfway decent watch.
Jewelers used to do battery changes, but most won’t anymore. So you end up going to a kiosk in a mall and trying to find one that does that sort of thing. I think I ended up paying $20 for a few minutes work, as I recall.
Ah. It has gotten harder to find places that’ll do it. Around here there’s a watch repair guy who’s only open a few hours a week —
he works more hours than that, but people leave things off for him to fix. Most places that sold batteries used to put them in, but they often don’t any longer.
Got fitted for a new set of golf clubs today as a 65th birthday present. I’ve bought clubs 4 times before in 50+ years of golf: my starter set in 8th grade; a better set when playing on the high school team; a new set when I was around 30 and the technology had changed considerably; and new woods about 20 years ago when I was playing my most/best. Was still playing 30 year old irons.
At 65, I no longer have the swing I had at 45-50, and I was looking for a set to take me into my retirement/dotage. Had a fantastic time getting fitted, and am looking forward to receiving my clubs in a week or so. (Just in time for the temps to really drop and the snow to really fly!)
With these sticks, I can confidently say that any shortcomings in my game are truly due to me, and not the clubs! Fun to be an old fart with enough disposable $ to be able to buy exactly what you want, from as quality/classy/no pressure vendor.
Not strictly a purchase, but last year I renewed my kids’ passports for the last time. Next time it’s time to renew, they’ll be adults and at least theoretically will be responsible for doing it themselves.
I’m in that odd spot where if everything goes well, I’ve probably got 2 each of everything to buy again. OTOH, if my personal shit hits my personal fan, I’ve already bought the last [whatever] of nearly everything. Substantially all of my recent purchases are short term immediate consumables, not durables.
I’m pretty sure I’ve bought my last Crescent wrench. OTOH, my youngest such wrench is already 40 years old. And shows no signs of age. Hmmm. Maybe I shoulda been a Crescent wrench. Wish I wasn’t showing quite so many signs of age.
I have batteries for things like my scale, thermometer, and a calculator, all of which I had to buy in packs of ten. I will never need all of them, but I couldn’t find any place online that sold them individually.
