The 19th Annual Steelers March to the Super Bowl Thread

See, this is where I disagree. You want to know what the best coaching job of the last 20 years was? Keeping batshit-crazy Antonio Brown under control for as long as he did. Nobody else can do it, and he was a jackass from before his college days.

I would certainly make the argument that the Burfict hit caused AB’s brain to short circuit, and since then it’s been a fool’s errand, but getting that kind of production out of him for that long alone merits a bust in Canton.

As for his so-called talent squandering, nobody could get past the Patriots consistently. Not the Ratbirds, not the Colts, nobody. But he consistently had the team in a solid position. Another example: he just missed the playoffs with an offense led by Mason Rudolph and Duck Hodges. Duck freaking Hodges. Remember when Peyton led the Colts to the playoffs then missed a season, leaving the team to Curtis Painter? They went 1-15 that year. Tomlin’s Curtis Painter year he missed the playoffs by a game.

His misfortune was to be a great coach when the Goddamn Patriots were a juggernaut. Since he started coaching his W-L record is second only to Belichick, and unlike Andy Reid, John Harbaugh, Bruce Arians, and the great Belichick himself, he’s never had a losing season.

He’ll be in Pittsburgh until he doesn’t want to be anymore. And then the people who were keen to run him out of town better hope that lightning strikes again. The Rooneys are pretty good judges of talent, but they’re bound to get it wrong sooner or later.

He didn’t trip anyone. The story gets more absurd with each retelling.

I agree with this 100%.

Separate question: Is Big Ben an All Time Top 15 QB, since the Super Bowl era began? I think he comes in around 13-15, so he is.

Sorry, you are correct. I should have said “attempted to trip” or “attempted to obstruct” or “illegally stepped onto the field to try to stop an opposing player from scoring a touchdown.”

Not a Steelers fan or even a Roethlisberger fan, but objectively speaking he should be.

Name 15 quarterbacks better than him. That’s the challenge. You could maybe, arguably, get close, but 15 is doubtful. For example: Bradshaw has 4 rings and he’s a distant second among Steelers quarterbacks. And that’s a guy with 4 freaking rings. You’d have trouble naming 15 quarterbacks better than Bradshaw.

Brady, Montana, Rodgers, Peyton, Elway, Marino, Aikman, Kelly, Favre and Young would be my Top 10. Then you have the batch with Ben, including Warner, Brees, Moon, Staubach, Bradshaw and Tarkenton. Can’t think of anyone else.

Bob Griese?
Russel Wilson?

I’m a Seattle fan and a huge Wilson fan, I have a jersey I’ve had since he was a rookie. So I’m a homer.

But even though Wilson has been historically good, and has a number of records, I think it’s still a bit early in his career to determine his place, his legacy. He has a number of years left and I think if his production drops off it will tarnish him. This year was bad, though much of it was due to injury and even the greatest QBs get hurt. I’m wondering if he’ll be able to recover by next year.

I’d put Moon with the top 10 and make it a top 11. I’d add a few more names to the second batch. Philip Rivers and Tony Romo come to mind, but Big Ben would rank ahead of them within that tier. Andrew Luck would probably be there without some bad luck with injuries, but that’s just a hypothetical. So yes, the #13 to #15 range sounds about right for him.

No place for Bart Starr? He technically squeaks into the Super Bowl era (having won the first two) and he still holds the career playoff passer rating record.

Well, there is still hope, though it just took a blow. The Jags are inexplicably winning, but Baltimore just scored a touchdown.

If they want it, it’s there for the taking.

Yep, all they have to do now is take care of business. I think the Steelers can, and that taking the field goal was the right move.

On to overtime.

Wow! Weird things happen on Florida football fields in winter! I felt like throwing up for the last hour, but Ben comes through (after 2 big drops by his receivers).

I can’t fucking believe it. The last 15-20 minutes of football was devastating to my heart. I’m still tingling and I can’t hold my hands still.

I just started breathing again. Now, just no tie tonight between LA and LV and we are in.

Good on Ben. I hope they give it some consideration.

I’m rooting for the TIE. I want the world (of Steeler fans) to burn. :slightly_smiling_face:

Won’t happen. Can’t happen. The Chargers and the Raiders won’t want to face the wrath of the NFL, football fans in general, gamblers, Congress, and the federal and state authorities for match fixing, and that’s just the start.

They could conceivably actually play and legitimately tie. Extremely unlikely, but I could live with it. But they won’t cooperate.
