The 2012 GOP Presidential Candidate is Forked

In the autumn of 1991, SNL had a skit “The Race to Be the Man Who Loses to George Bush”. Clinton wasn’t even a character in that skit.

October 2007, I was visiting my alma mater & discussing the election with a liberal professor with whom I amiably debated back in the day. We agreed that the Dem nomination was Hillary’s to lose, but if she did, it might be to Richardson or Biden. We never considered a black Illinois senator with an Arabic-sounding name.
Also, we recognized that the Reps has no solid front runner, tho Giuliani has a slight edge at the time. But we agreed one thing was sure- no way that McCain would be the nominee.
I predict President Gladys Knight in a landslide, as foretold by Marie Osmond on the Larry King show.*
(In the Spring of this year, Marie told Larry -and I paraphrase- “We have the chance for the first woman President, the first black President, or the first Mormon President. I say we combine all three and elect Gladys Knight.”
Btw, yes, as in GK and the Pips.)

What cave were you and your professor living in during 2007? He was clearly the primary challenger to Hillary all through that year. Edwards was #3, but could never get enough oxygen to change the game (which turned out to be just as well).

Hell, the Sunday after the 2006 midterms, the Washington Post Outlook section’s front page was “Hillary vs. Obama.” They were already billing the 2008 Dem side as a two-person race.

(And yeah, they were a bit over-eager to get to the 2008 race. Five days earlier, the Dems had picked up 28 House seats and 6 Senate seats to gain control of both houses of Congress, plus a bunch of state legislatures across the nation, and they couldn’t be bothered to discuss what that was about; they were already jumping ahead to the next election.)

I thought there was buzz about Obama running for president from the time he made his speech at the 2004 convention. But then, RTF, FriarTed is a conservative and wouldn’t be likely to hear Democratic gossip. And unless you consistently watch the cables news channels or live in D.C., you’re not all that likely to know what the Washington Post is saying. I certainly had no idea of that story, but then in those days I wasn’t watching cable news. Or any news, actually. I’m a born-again current events junkie, except that this is actually the first time, so it’s not “again.” But after more than six months of it, I can’t imagine life without it.

I remember a Dilbert strip in 1991 where Dogbert declares he’s running for president. Dilbert asks, “As a Democrat?” and Dogbert replies, “No, a Communist. I want to have a chance to win.”

Well, Clinton sure showed the doubters, didn’t he?

Four years is a long time. Let’s see what happens before deciding who’s forked and who’s not.

Sarah Palin is presently awaiting word from God on whether she’ll go again.
