I assume as an American he wasn’t on anyone’s list of possibilities.
Well, based on live updates in the NY Times, he seems to be emphasizing world peace, building bridges, seeks to be “close to those who suffered” and wants the Church to be “synodal”, which best I can tell means “walking together”.
the priest on abc news knows the now pope. has had meetings with him, corresponded, had meals with him.
he is saying he is very approachable, very down to earth, modest, and listens.

Getting close. He graduated college (Villanova, BS in math) the same year I graduated high school.
He is apparently fairly progressive, being part of adding women to the group that nominates bishops to the pope. I would call him more Peruvian than American, though. He spent 20 years there and got Peruvian citizenship.
I thought it was notable that he spoke in Italian and Spanish in his address, but not in English.
If he wants the Catholic Church to be more synodal I wonder if he’ll push for renewed ecumenicalism with the Orthodox and major Protestant sects. It’d be nice for Christianity to be more catholic as in the words of the Nicene Creed.

Pope Leo XIII, if my history is correct, authored the encyclical Rerum Novorum, and was very pro-worker and for economic justice. Also spoke out against socialism.
synodal caught my attention as well. patriarch of moscow aside the orthodox church is very synodal, and not just clergy minded. when women monastics speak in the orthodox church everyone listens.
He has apparently been accused in the past of not being very aggressive about priests accused of sexual misconduct.
Both being American and young (for Pope) (69) are a bit of surprise as is 4 ballots.
Seems pro-worker and union, but can’t find info on other social issues.

Given what seems to be his previous criticism towards some members of the Trump administration, such as this comment towards JD Vance or perhaps this one, their relationship will be one to watch.
On the Guardian too, it was reported that Trump was honored that an American is the Pope.
