I have a stupid question that stems from childhood…
The first time I ever heard that “I accept this award on their behalf” was as a kid, and I always thought at the time that they kept it. I’m like wow, they just get a free award.

It didn’t occur to me until later in adulthood that they probably give the award to the person later on, but just to verify, that’s right, right? The Oscar still goes to the person, the person who accepts the award on their behalf is just accepting it to give it to them later, right?

Yeah, they have to get the statuettes prepared. Note that “tie” isn’t absolute; if you can get within three votes, they count it.

I thought that the Ranked Choice Voting used by the Academy is supposed to prevent ties? (statistically highly unlikely)

There is a process to get the winner’s name engraved on the award. So even if you are there, you have to give it back briefly.
