The 2nd Amendment-Keep, Fix or Dump

Keep.

Fix. Lop off the militia clause. Reiterate that the right to own and bear firearms is just as worthy of protection as the 1st, 4th, 5th, and the rest of the Amendments.

Oh, and Czarcasm, you might as well just move the poll to GD now.

Perhaps you should ask Chronos for a definition of “personal defense”, rather than argue. Please remember that this is a poll, not a debate.
Thank you.

As I’ve said before, I think Dopers are capable of posting without breaking the rules for the most part, and so far I’ve been proven right.

What examples are you thinking of?

I voted for dump, but I’d be just as happy if the damn thing made sense.

Eh, keep or fix. To fix it I would clarify that citizens could own the same type of single man portable weapons that the military has. Except no indiscriminate ‘area’ weapons (not sure how to define that without causing confusion though).

Just to clarify: you think private citizens should be allowed to carry miniguns, LAWs and RPGs?

Miniguns are only man portable in the movies.

Correlation does not equal causation.

Take it elsewhere.

As shown here. Thank you for the clarification.

I think the Second Amendment clearly says that citizens have a right to own firearms as individuals. Which I think is a bad idea. So I voted dump.

Yessir, sorry.

As ScumPup said, mini guns are not man portable. And at least I consider LAW’s and RPG’s to be area weapons. I excluded ‘area’ weapons in my original post.

Maybe I am wrong, but I think that anything that explodes is considered an area weapon.

Argent Towers had already asked Chronos for such - as yet no response.

I didn’t feel linking an example of a firearm being used for personal defense was arguing, but maybe enticing Chronos for a clarification.

Please note that Chronos seems to be off-line at this time.

I voted ‘fix’ because I think de facto we’re already not enforcing it. That machine guns, hand-held rocket launchers, and tactical nuclear missiles are already illegal for civilians is a tacit acknowledgment that the 2nd amendment can’t be taken literally as it stands.

OTOH, dumping it means civilians would presumably have no federally granted right to arms, which is going too far.

Could you define ‘debate’, please?

I’d define an area weapon is anything that can deliver fire to a wide area, which would include pretty much any fully automatic weapon.
