The 3 Stooges and the Marx Brothers

You left out The Outlaws Is Coming, which co-starred a pre-Batman Adam West.

Moe: I’ll have three pieces of burnt toast and a rotten egg.

Waiter: Three pieces of burnt toast and a rotten egg? What do you want that for?

Moe: I got a tapeworm and that’s good enough for it!

Hassan bin Sobar: I’m an aristocrat. I am Hassan bin Sobar!

Shemp: I’ve had a few too many myself!

“For Duty and Humanity!”

Man: Nice rifle!
Moe: “Yeah..I got it for my Bar Mitzvah!”

I’m sure it was right up there in the pantheon of Rube Goldberg movie classics.
I had no idea Rube Goldberg made movies, but I’m not surprised.

I saw most of those in theaters when they came out, and even at that young age I could tell they were bad. Nothing but vehicles for their normal shtick. But did the Stooges ever come within light years of the commentary in “Duck Soup” except maybe for their knock-off of “The Great Dictator” in one short? I wonder what would have happened if they had ever connected with a good writer. Olsen and Johnson, for instance, produced some real crap (I have an example) but did great in “Hellzapoppin” when teamed with some good writers (and the honing of the show during the Broadway run no doubt.)

But I’ll certainly give them hard working.

Give the Stooges credit where it’s due – You Nazty Spy wasn’t a knock-off of Chaplin’s The Great Dictator – it PRECEDED it by nine months. Apparently the first Hollywood production to poke fun at the Nazis.

Okay, while not the biggest Stooge fan, I’ll admit to liking “Swinging the Alphabet” a lot:

That’s my take. I don’t understand the weird fandom rivalry even more than I don’t understand most fandom rivalries.

“Calling Dr. Moe, calling Dr. Larry …”

No, no, no
it was
“Calling Dr. Howard, Dr. Fine, Dr. Howard” (their last names)
It’s reportedly shown up (in the background, practically subliminal) in lots of hospital movies and shows.
“FOR DUTY AND HUMANITY!!”

I’ve never been a Stooges fan but when I was working in the nitrate vaults for the Library of Congress, I was visiting the lab and they had some original nitrate negatives of Stooges shorts that they were transferring.

It was honestly one of the most beautiful things I’d ever seen. Their films were never really known for their production values per se, but the pristine condition of the negative and all the textural subtleties of the nitrate stock made it absolutely transfixing.

I didn’t laugh once, but I will never forget it. Amazing.

Actually, there was quite a bit of wordplay in the Stooges shorts, as I discovered to my delight upon rewatching them after a long hiatus. “We were back from the war, hot-dogging it and waiting to be mustered out.”

I remember a short of theirs, “Calling All Curs,” in which they were veterinarians at an animal hospital. They were addressed as Dr. Moe, Dr. Larry, and Dr. Curly in that one.

We have to cremate him!

We [del]haven’t got any[/del] ain’t got no cream!

Curly: “If at first you don’t succeed, keep on sucking till you do suck seed.”

“Hold hands you lovebirds”

Emil Sitka, stooge-ish.

“She was gonna be his wife, but now she’s gonna be his daughter!”

Curly, after the boys uncover a plot to steal money from their father (also played by Curly, barely disguised with sideburns) by his fiance. They substitute Curly, one of the three sons, for the father at the wedding, since they look the same without the facial hair.

By the way, I have an autographed photo of the Three Stooges. “To our good friend Brian. Best wishes to a fellow stooge.”

I sent them a fan letter when I was 8 years old.

Priceless.

Quit bragging or I’ll rip your tonsils out!

Why I oughta…

Spread out!
