It was probably a rom-com of some kind. Set in modern times (i.e., not a period piece). In an American city. The hero was not a sophisticated guy but a gentle, shy sort of fellow (I think).
The only scene I remember is that he is trying to impress the woman and he sets up a “date” scenario on the roof of his apartment building (a pretty modest apartment-- I think). Maybe because he’s too broke to take her to a nice restaurant (I think). It’s nighttime, there’s a little table and rickety chairs, and he has made some food, maybe Italian food? She is impressed. He has a radio playing and they start to slow dance. Wish I could remember the song-- that might help. Then it starts to rain gently and they keep dancing in the rain. It may sound corny but it comes across as quite sweet and romantic.
Hmmm…I really don’t think so… My admittedly vague memory of the guy is that he’s modest and not too sure of himself. That’s not exactly Frasier.
I suppose this might have happened when Niles was wooing Daphne. Geez, if that’s the case I’m going to be really disappointed. I was looking forward to seeing the movie again when some sharp Doper named it for me.
It’s one of my favorite movies. Written by Neil Simon. It is a very 70s sweet and romantic film. Richard Dreyfuss won the best actor Oscar for his role.
