The 7 classic product designs

There are “7 classic product designs”. What are these classics? Definitely in the list is the Coca-Cola bottle, the Zippo lighter and Levi Jeans. But what are the others? Is a chair in there? a car? Is Starck’s lemon squeezer one of these 7 design classics?

Hmm.

Welcome aboard, me again!

BTW, where did you hear of “7 classic designs”? Your question sorely vexes Google.

Thanks re: BTW, where did you hear of "7 classic …

This has been around ad. agencies and design studios in the UK for years. Some have guessed the Ducatti, the Macintosh chair … trouble is, can’t yet find any-one who has the real story.

No, it’s not myth.

Assuming there isn’t a factual answer to this question, I’d like to vote for…

… the Boeing 747
… the F7 diesel locomotive
… the C&O 2-6-6-6 Steam engine
… the 1957 Thunderbird

If there is a factual answer, then, well, never mind.

Well, Google helped me find this page:

http://www.cnn.com/1999/STYLE/design/12/30/mil.20thcen.design.ap/

Not EXACTLY what you’re looking for, but it includes the Chrysler building, Ray-Bans, the iMac, the 1933 Pierce-Arrow and Frank Lloyd Wright. Also the Barcalounger and the McDonalds french-fry container.

Maybe it’s a good place to start?

And, upon posting:

Algernon, I’ll see your '57 T-bird and raise you a '55…

I’ll be interested to hear the “correct” answer as well but since it’s been hijacked already…

North American P-51D Mustang
Ferdinand Porsche’s Volkswagen
Lockeed Super Constellation
Colt’s 1860 army pistol
Graflex Crown/Speed Graphic press camera
Gibson Les Paul guitar

stockton re: classic product designs, thanks for the CNN lead.

I’d like to add:
the paperclip
the post-it note
the band-aid
the cheese hat

Let’s hold off on nominations until I move this to IMHO (at which point it will be a really good one!). For now, let’s try to find some citation to some authority which blessed an “official” list.

manhattan, I totally agree and I’m lookin’ for the actual (alleged) list now with bated breath.

yohimboguy, did you check my cite or was that off the top of your noggin?

Quote from the cite above:
“Zippers and paper clips, Band-Aids and Post-It Notes and four-button suits. Breadmakers, Cuisinarts, Empire State Buildings, Sydney Opera Houses, interstate highways and Mazda Miatas. The Tide box, the CBS logo, the Volkswagen Beetle – classic and redesigned.”

…only thing missing was the (dreaded) cheese hat (go Falcons!).

I didn’t even see a site! Cool! How primitive can we go? How about “wheel”?

The Colt M1911

The DC-3

What do you mean, ‘primitive’? The “circular transportation facilitation device” was only patended last year! (It got him the 2001 ignobel prize of technology)

Now let’s get back to the GQ aspect of the question.

Sorry if I’m being unbelievably dense, (or possibly just non-american) but what’s a cheese hat? my mind boggles…

Think “Green Bay Packers fan”. Picture.

Well, the picture answers the question wonderfully, so thanks - but the rest of the answer is of no use at all, seeing as I don’t know where Green Bay is, and don’t even have any idea what sport they play

thanks anyway!

Wisconsin. (American) football.

Sorry manhattan for this continued hijack, but I cannot let this opportunity pass… on behalf of all Packer fans, and Wisconsinites in particular, I’d like to note that we don’t all wear those silly Cheesehead hats.

(And I can’t believe I forgot the DC-3 in my list. Sheesh.)
(While this is still hijacked, can I add the Spitfire?)

Oh hell. I started a new thread so the mods don’t need to move this one.
