Anyone else going to this huge auction this weekend? The largest single owner car auction ever in the US. I got a real early bidder’s number, I’m in the front rows with Wayne Carini and Jay Leno. Yeah, right…
I drove by there today, the 400 cars selling at Summit Motorsports Park on Saturday are parked side by side in four rows and total a mile of cars!
They are very rare, I can only turn up photos of 6 of them, and only two are restored. Soon there will be three.
The predecessor to the electric golf cart, they were built in Redlands CA. They were used in small communities, mainly resort areas like Catalina. In 1951 a friend of the designer asked if one would work on a golf course for someone who could not walk the course. A bit of widening, some fat tires, and the Marketeer 419 golf car was born.
The Marketeer was the darling of the rich golf crowd after clubs finally allowed them to be used. Sinatra, Crosby, Hope, they all had one. The rest is history, they were followed by numerous companies and today are ubiquitous on golf courses, ranches, and resorts. And on my 1/2 acre yard.
Congratulations! Have you ever done any restoration like that?
From $500 to $10,000 would be nice.
There was some really interesting stuff listed. I already can’t seem to complete the relatively easy projects I have. I have zero experience with automotive stuff like that.
Good luck! and of course pics OIDH.
Oh yeah. It has been awhile, though, the last time I painted a car was in the 1980s.
Here is a quickie restore I did on another vintage cart, all I did so far is just the battery compartment. This isn’t show quality, just a nice clean up.
The Marketeer is really in excellent condition, just needs a bit of dent removal. Every item that would be impossible to find is there, lights, emblems, wheels, door handle, motor, speed controller. The next to last photo on the auction site shows the Chargicator (volt meter). I have never seen another one on any Marketeer cart.
How did I not hear about this auction? It wasn’t too terribly far from me. Congrats on the Marketeer. I don’t know anything about those, but looks like a fun little project. Good luck with it!
Went up there with a friend on Friday (preview day, it’s about an hour drive from here). Yep, over a mile of cars. Not a great interest, but I have a weakness for minimilist cars, I’ve owned a Morris Minor, a 2CV and a VW thing. Was a fun day just seeing all these cars, many of which I’ve heard of but not seen in the flesh. Looked mostly at the oddballs and orphans, although there was some Detroit iron from late 50’s/early 60’s. Looked at the website, was surprised by the winning bids on some of them.
I was a bit surprised at the majority of them being what I would call derelicts. Given the long storage time of many of them, I was not surprised that most earlier than about 1975 had rotted bits where the tires once were.
There was quite a crowd that day. I didn’t go back for the bidding, I really have no interest in a restoration project right now. It was fun. The local paper had front page stories Friday, Saturday and today.
