The 9th Annual Steelers March to the Super Bowl Thread

I’m only pessimistic in that, while I think Ben is quite capable of running a no-huddle offense, it gives the defense precious little time to rest (and it is an aging D). Arians and Ben have both hinted strongly that they’d like to feature it more. It’s a double-edged sword though and I’m not sure it’s worth it unless the team is down and really needs the points. In the end that’s a minor pessimism and I trust Tomlin to steer the ship in the right direction. They have also been practicing with some sets with both RBs in the backfield. That might be an exciting shift in the offense. Tomlin appears to have a lot more confidence in Redman than in previous seasons.

The other big question mark is at Left Tackle. Ben is less reliant on that protection than a lot of QBs but he’s only human. Legursky at RG doesn’t worry me at all; I think he’ll step up.

There are no surprises on the cut list, though I do wish there was room for a few more players. Swayze Waters (what a great name, by the way) came around but he was bound to be cut. He ought to be picked up by somebody sooner or later. Crezdon Butler had to have been a tough call, he played very well this preseason, but the Steelers are pretty set at cornerback (even if I disagree about the skill level of the corners they kept). He also should land somewhere else. The last “big” name is Jeremy Kapinos, and he will get another job. There’s no doubt in my mind. But Sepulveda is entrenched there and they can’t carry two punters.

Byron Leftwich is out for the season, like I figured he would be. Batch gets another year. I think he would have been cut had Leftwich not been hurt.

I’m surprised they kept Jonathan Dwyer. he came into camp out of shape and didn’t do anything in the first two preseason games but apparently did enough to get out of Tomlin’s doghouse. They have Mendenhall, Redman, and Moore, so I don’t see too many touches in Dwyer’s future barring injuries. If Baron Batch hadn’t been knocked out for the season he was history too, so he can thank his lucky stars and learn a lesson from this.

Anyway, there was nothing unexpected. It’s about what a Steelers fan would have predicted before camp opened with the exception of Cotchery, who should be a solid 3 or 4 receiver and should see some good time because Ward is getting up in years.

My concerns, however, have not been allayed. it’s still the O-line and the secondary that will make or break the season. Pouncey and Polamalu can’t do everything, so they need to step up.

So now it’s on to play the hated Ratbirds. Why the NFL had them open with Baltimore is beyond me as it’s a marquee game for the league and would probably have been better later in the season when the teams had fully gotten into the swing of things. Anyway, Pittsburgh beats Baltimore by a touchdown, which represents the biggest win in the series in a long time. Flacco does a decent job but fails once more to make it to the elite level when he chokes up with the game on the line. Ben gets knocked around for as many as 5 sacks and numerous hits, but he gets the job done as usual, maybe even drawing a roughing the passer penalty.

Yeah, I thought it was funny too. He’s one of the only quarterbacks in the league that cannot get a roughing the passer penalty to save his life, no matter how hard or late he gets hit. Tom Brady would miss half the season every year if he took the punishment Ben does, and he gets a gazillion roughing calls.

Hahahaha! Good one!
The only surprise from the cut list for me was Tony Hills but it’s not exactly an earth-shaking shock. Seems unlikely that he’ll be picked up by anyone. I don’t know if he’s eligible for the practice squad, if he is then he’ll be good to have around in case of emergency.

OK, so let’s set the table for the upcoming season.

Football Outsiders has the Steelers as the early favorites to win the Super Bowl, though only by a few percentage points. They are predicted to have a slightly less than 50% chance of earning a bye and a 16% chance of winning the Super Bowl. They say that Pittsburgh’s strength of schedule is 31 of 32, which surprises me because they’re playing a 1st place schedule, but they’re the experts.

ESPN has the Steelers ranked 3rd behind Green Bay and New England. I can’t figure out why the Patriots get so much love given that they’ve not been back to the Super Bowl in years yet consistently are predicted to get there. Check that, actually, I have a pretty good guess.

Anyway, I’m hoping for a rematch with the Packers in February. The last thing I want to see is a Keystone Bowl. Pennsylvania would explode into flames if that happened, and the whole state would get sucked into the bowels of Hell of the Eagles actually managed to win a Super Bowl. Football Outsiders is giving that scenario a slight edge right now, but I’m hoping the Eagles do what they’ve tried so hard to emulate and pull a Washington all the way to the basement of the NFC East.

What that indicates to me is that we Steelers fans have a lot to look forward to this year. If the secondary holds up and the O-line does anything resembling a credible job Pittsburgh will have a hell of a season. Maybe their last for a while. But the future is now, and the Steelers make the playoffs with ease this season.

I’m sticking to my 7-point win prediction over Baltimore on Sunday. It should be a good game, no matter who wins.

Hills got a one-year deal with the Broncos, I believe. And Troy Polamalu got a 4 year deal, so THAT’S all settled.

Allowed a decent return on the opening kickoff, with a tacked on offsides penalty. A long run to the outside by Ray Rice, and a long touchdown catch by Boldin. This is about the worst start imaginable to the 2011 season for the Steelers. Hope this isn’t an indication of how the season will go…

Question: Is the Steelers’ Defense still locked out? Hoping for a second half turnaround…

Just dropping in to see how you Steelers fans are liking this game. I hope you’re all enjoying yourselves.

Go Ravens!!!

I picked the Stillers over the Ravens today. It’s so nice being wrong.

Yeah, i must admit that much of my happiness is due to the fact that i actually agreed with much of Airman Doors’s assessments of the relative strengths of the two teams. While AD does tend to overestimate the Steelers a bit, i thought that this was, at best, going to be a very close contest.

I twisted my ankle something fierce this morning. That was significantly less painful than watching this game. Wow, that was a beating.

Wow; didn’t see that coming. Steelers fans can at least feel good knowing that 8 of their games are against the Bengals, Browns and the NFC West. Of course, so are the Ravens’…

Ooof! We were outplayed on both sides of the ball. I did not know whether we would win or lose, but I never expected a blow out like this.

Congrats Ravens fans, your team earned it.

Hat was a total and comPlete embarrassment. Horrible defensive effort, terrible execution on offense in the second half. The only slightly non sucky thing was that I have Ray Rice on my fantasy team. That’s not much of a consolation, though. Pretty ticked off right now. At least it’s only game 1, and not the playoffs.

That game was sickening to watch. As you know, I’ve been a Steelers fan for my entire life, and I have NEVER seen a game that badly played on both sides of the ball. I don’t know what the Steelers were doing, but whatever it was it wasn’t playing football.

They have a relatively short time to get well. I’m hoping that this can be written off as one of those football things, because with the remainder of the schedule being as easy as it is, if they don’t win at least 12 games they’re in for some serious shit come playoff time. 7 turnovers? Are you joking?

I strongly suspect that the rematch in Heinz Field will turn out a bit differently. But in the meantime, enjoy the victory, Ravens fans. I’ll be drowning my sorrows in a tasty can of Mountain Dew. It’s not quite up to the task, but it’ll have to do.

The 9th annual Steelers tripping down the steps on the way to the Superbowl.

With tickets in hand.

They will return the money.
Score Lions 1 win. Steelers 1 loss.

This was simply a continuation of last year’s horrid Super Bowl performance, and quite honestly, playoff showing.

We got lucky that the Ravens decided not to show up in the second half of the Divisional game, and we got lucky that the Jets decided not to show up for the first half of the Conference Championship.

In the Super Bowl the defensive secondary was completely exposed, and had it not been for injuries to Donald Driver and Charles Woodson on the Packers, we probably would have lost that game 45-17.

The defense is a year older, and it shows. Our defensive linemen, Aaron Smith, Casey Hampton, and Brett Keisel have been playing for 13, 11, and 10 seasons respectively. Farrior has been playing for 15. Add in the terrible corner play of Taylor and McFadden, and the fatigue of Harrison following offseason back surgery, and we could be in for a long and disappointing year.

Now, they’ll probably still win 10 or 11 games, because there simply isn’t that much strength in the AFC, but the things we saw today were not flukes. They are deeper issues that point to a team headed for rebuilding, not legitimate contention.

I don’t think it’s as bleak as all that. The Ravens’ offensive line was seriously upgraded this year. Even with that towards the middle and end of the game the Steelers still got penetration.

The problem as I see it is that the corners in the defense aren’t equipped to hold out forever, and Pittsburgh didn’t do any of their blitz-from-every-direction stuff in this game. When the quarterback has to get rid of the ball quickly or choke on it their flaws are hidden. Flacco had too much time because they were only rushing a few instead of bringing the kitchen sink like they usually do.

The real test comes later. With such a weak schedule, if the defense sucks then, I’ll agree with your assessment. Until then I’ll simply chalk this up as a good effort by the Ravens and unusually bad game planning from the coaching staff.
