Al Franken doesn’t stand a chance. He’s a weenie. And an east coast liberal limo weenie at that. Now, don’t bother to refute my statements with facts, facts have nothing to do with his electability.
We have an history of electing interesting individuals, and we even have elected a liberal weenie before, in fact several times with Wellstone. But he was our liberal weenie, and he was sincere. Franken is neither of those things, he’s a shill.
He was born in New York, and don’t think we don’t know it, no matter what he says.
The only reason he is coming back here is to try to get elected, because he thinks we’re so stupid and easily awed. We weren’t good enough for him when he was rich and famous, but we’re good enough now so he can run for the Senate.
Why isn’t he running for Senate in New York? They all seem to like him out there, right? They can keep him.
And don’t even bother about mentioning Wellstone wasn’t born here, he paid his dues for minimally 20 years before he ran for anything.
No, technically she’s right. Franken was born in NYC, even though he grew up in MN.
Why, because he agrees with your politics? There are a lot of lawyers in the Senate-- a lot of very intelligent lawyers. Franken isn’t in that league. Now, he might very well make a fine Senator, but that’s a different issue.
Yeah, it is because he is agrees with my politics. Umm, since when does being a lawyer make you smart?
He attended Harvard University and graduated cum laude in 1973 with a Bachelor of Arts in government. I stand by my statement of top 10 percentile of intelligence in the Senate. This is IMHO, and based on extreme personal prejudice against the public statements of the senators that I’ve heard.
Now I could easily be wrong and have made that hyperbolic statement in a moment of enthusiasm. But now that I think of it, who are the 10 senators who are obviously smarter? I’m pretty sure there are no Nobel Laureates in the senate. Having a more advanced degree does not count. GW has an MBA from Harvard.
You did mention this, but Coleman won against a guy who entered the race a few weeks before the election. It’s a wonder Mondale came that close to winning, given his nonexistent preparation; he had to try to appeal to someone else’s base with virtually no time left to to do it.
Mondale had very good name recognition, he had the sympathy vote as well. Coleman isn’t from here, either, and as someone pointed out, tends to be a little well, untrustworthy.
Franken is a highly intelligent and quick witted person. He will make a formidable candidate and a great senator. He will not be afraid to speak his mind. That is my only concern - that he’ll be prone to making a quick-witted and accurate observation that will nevertheless be turned into fodder by the slobbering right.
Nevertheless, people who regard him as effete and wimpy… well, please go ahead and continue to do so. You’ll find your back on the mat before you can shout “megadittos!”
Now that that Santorum fellow is gone, Coleman may be one U.S. Senator who is most badly mismatched with his state. I don’t think that Franken could win against an average Republican candidate, but I imagine he could win against Coleman. Franken would first have to win the Democratic Primary, however, and (at least according to Kos) there’s already a strong field of Democrats in the running.
No kidding. The guy sounds like the long lost Kennedy brother. I definitely think Franken has more cred as a Minnesotan than Coleman does. I think Franken’s got a decent shot. Most people I know think Coleman’s kind of a joke.
So, your evidence of his intelligence is that he has a fancy degree, but I’m not allowed to use similar evidence to prove my case. Well, I guess you got me there!!
