"The Alcohol and Drug Addiction Cure". Is this book any good?

I saw a few ads for the book, and it sounded believable. But, of course, that’s what TV is all about, being believable enough to separate me from my money.
I don’t drink or use drugs, but I am curious, because the marketing seems catchy, to me.

Anybody know anything about it?

Thanks,
hh

There’s no book by that exact title.

I think he may be referrring to “The Alcoholism and Addiction Cure: A Holistic Approach to Total Recovery”, which is in heavy rotation on TV commercials right now.

Ah, I have seen that commercial at like 3 in the morning …

From what I understand from this board, you pretty much have to hit bottom or the equivalent and self determine that you have to quit… that book to me screams buy me, i will help you get your family member off smack. It seems to be written for people wanting to intervene. That always struck me as not the way to go [do interventions ever actually work? Or do they just piss off the intervenee?]

Wouldnt it make more sense to visit one of the *anon meetings and ask for advice?

The book is fairly controversial, and the actual Medical experts seem to think it’s not much help.

Ah yes, Chris Prentiss and his Passages “rehabilitation center” in Malibu. I might suggest anyone interested in this kook to read a damning (but biased) article from the LA Weekly.

In any event, the guy has not been very successful in curing patients in-house at sixty grand a month or more… really can’t see how someone buying his book can expect better results…

:eek::eek::eek:

Holy shit, it has to be cheaper just to stay addicted

I read the LA Weekly article, and if a quarter of the story is true, this guy is as bad as L. Ron Hubbard or Jimmy Swaggart.

To encourage desperate (if gullible/naive/stupid) families to sell off thier life savings so little Johnnie or Suzie can get better (without having to use the taboo word “alcoholic”) in a luxury spa setting; I am shocked that someone has not snapped (after realising that they had been conned, and were not magically cured) and given this charlatan a Hells-Angel style stomping…

To paraphrase sam Kinison, “if you can come up with 60 grand, you don’t have a problem yet!” I’m not sure if that’s funny or not.

As a former coordinator for Tough Love, I can tell you that nobody can make anybody quit anything. Period. The most you can do is take care of yourself and allow the user to suffer the consequences of their own actions (meaning don’t bail them out, pay their bills, etc..). Nothing will make an addict quit something if they don’t want to quit on their own. Anyone who thinks they can get someone to quit something is allowing their ego to delude themselves.

heh… my buddy is working on Tough Love 2 right now, just saw him on the set earlier this week. small world

Deleted.

Actually my wife and I were involved with Tough Love International and then Tough Love America, and not a tv show that ripped off the name.

Sorry, my bad, didn’t realize you worked for Toughlove and didn’t realize “tough love” has only been in the vernacular since 1985 (it hasn’t). Also didn’t realize the name had been ripped off (according to the US Court it probably wasn’t). Nevertheless, it seems you harbor ill feelings over this, again my apologies.

No apologies from you needed. But the name has been used illegally by a variety of different groups when it is in fact a trademarked name. More sinister is that some groups tried to use the actual materials and programs and call them their own.
