Perhaps McConnell was less tolerant of Trump’s assassination attempt than Pence.
Perhaps McConnell has been getting calls from the only supporters that matter to him, pointing out that Civil War II is not so great for corporate profits.
Perhaps McConnell is finally making a principled stand.

Far from avoiding the topic of impeaching Mr. Trump, Mr. McConnell said it was a question for the Senate parliamentarian, and promised Mr. Biden a quick answer.
Assuming McConnell doesn’t start a trial prior to the 20th, wouldn’t this be a question for Schumer? Or is Biden just getting Mitch warmed up to the idea so he won’t protest to much when it happens?
I can picture Trump pulling up to a Deutsche Bank office with a semi trailer filled with $450M in crumpled up dollar bills, meth tainted hundreds, and confederate money…
Joe knows how to get shit done. That’s why we needed someone with experience who has been around the Senate block a few times, i.e., a grownup. Running something by Mitch when it wasn’t necessary was a very good move.
The words “Trump” and “smart enough” shouldn’t appear in the same sentence. But even if he resigns after being impeached but before the 20th, I’m not sure that would spare him from a trial and barring from future office.
I was thinking “I’m smart enough to see through Trump” proved you wrong but really, who needs to be smart to do that? So I think your point stands.
I won’t give Mitch a cookie until he calls the Senate back early for a trial.
I have a feeling that Mitch actually wants Trump gone. He was visibly angry last week; I can see him now voting to convict when impeachment goes to the Senate.
