I guess the Washington Post has a recording of Trump talking to Raffensperger.
From there:
"At another point, Trump said: “So look. All I want to do is this. I just want to find 11,780 votes, which is one more than we have. Because we won the state.”
Good Stuff. How will his fans explain it all away? Cause you know they will.
How hard are the Trumplicans going to fight to retain the Georgia senate seats?
Very freakin’ hard.
If there is any kind of victory by the Democrats, it will be fought. Hard.
It’s obvious why. The Trumplicans have staked out their ground; The House and Senate are to decide elections now. If the voters choose another party, Trumplicans argue that they alone have the power to override this bad decision and install the party of their choice.
This is where they stand now; All they need is “suspicion” that there were voting irregularities, and they can override the vote and install their candidate. They don’t need any proof or even any evidence whatsoever.
Now - fast forward to "what if Democrats hold the House and Senate? Well, then by Trumplican logic, the Democrat House and Senate will be able to simply put whoever they choose into the whitehouse in perpetuity (as they themselves want to do.)
Projection.
They will not allow this to happen.
They have gone all-in on the destruction of democracy. You can’t do this half way. It’s all or nothing for the Trumplicans at this point. They have chosen.
That sure sounds like an attempt to improperly influence an election official, which is an offence under Georgia law, according to the earlier articles when Graham tried something similar.
This is fucking outrageous, way beyond what I even thought possible. Surely there is a crime of some sort being committed by Trump on that call, right? Absolutely chilling.
I swear these fuckers are up to something more than meets the eye. I’m not sure what they are going to try to pull on 1/6 but I expect it to be way beyond what any of us expect.
It won’t surprise me if people end up being arrested for not doing what Trump wants done, provided he can convince someone to carry out the order.
According to the WaPo article it certainly could be, but it’s not quite cut and dried enough to be a quick call from a legal standpoint: Edward B. Foley, a law professor at Ohio State University, said that the legal questions are murky and would be subject to prosecutorial discretion. But he also emphasized that the call was “inappropriate and contemptible” and should prompt moral outrage.
Here’s a question I haven’t been able to Google an answer to – with the new Congress being sworn in today, what’s the status of the Georgia Senate seats? Are they currently vacant? At the very least, Purdue’s term ended at the conclusion of the last Congress. I’m not certain of Loeffler’s status – she was appointed to fill a vacancy and I’m not sure whether that means she continues until either she or Warnock are finally elected.
I ask because with a potentially extremely close run off scheduled for January 5, we may not know who wins those races for days. That could mean that Republicans are down one or two seats during the joint session, which would further limit their (already nonexistent) chances of sustaining an objection to Biden electors in the Senate.
Indeed. But I am grateful for that article in another respect besides just a further example of how morally bankrupt Trump is. And that is that it seems that Trump has managed to talk himself into believing his own crap. It’s inconceivable to him he could lose at anything, so of course he didn’t!
At a remove it’s sort of fascinating. He really is a million miles from a Machiavellian schemer, rather just a self-deluded child clinging to false hopes. Unfortunately for us we don’t have the luxury yet of viewing him at a remove .
The Trump tweeted Sunday that he spoke to Raffensperger on the phone in an attempt to convince him to look into unfounded conspiracy theories about the November election. According to Trump, Raffensperger refused to do so. Raffensperger responded to Trump later in a tweet: “Respectfully, President Trump: What you’re saying is not true. The truth will come out.”
And who will be the pro tem? The two Senators from Georgia are out, that leaves a 48-48 tie. Grassley is currently the pro tem, but in the case of a tie, and there is nobody to break the tie, since Harris will not have been seated as VP, on the vote for pro tem, who takes the job as President of the Senate?
