The "animation is here and the world is ending" thread

I just hope that someone doesn’t make it “their thing” to put in an animated GIF in certain common situations. I think we all know what we’re talking about when I say that. Having to scroll by boilerplate text is not as annoying as having to always scroll by a meaningless animated GIF.

Also, I hope that we can go light on the speed, too. It’s one thing to post someone doing a slow facepalm, quite another to have some jackass jumping around like it was some mid 2000s monkey you were supposed to punch. Having to see many of those will be too distracting in a material way.

I don’t mean annoying. Your eyes were meant to focus on things that move, it was and is imperative to your survival that they do. That’s why passively watching TV is so easy to do. But my brain finds it difficult to focus on the words if there is something else on the screen that my reptilian brain is demanding I focus on instead in case it is a predator or food.

Is it the ads? I don’t recall any of them being gifs before today. Half of them are gifs now.

Another stupid thing to pretend this site is hip and draw in new members while all three newbies that join would have any how and 10 more people stop coming here during work because it’s more obvious their fucking off.

I enjoy the odd reaction gif, although if they were restricted to the Pit I wouldn’t be upset.

It’s the boards where everyone’s signature is six inches of moving, flashing images that are the harbingers of the endtimes.

Meh

More like this

Right. Where is this setting, because I want it. I’ve already got a plugin that prevents video from autoplaying, but I can’t find anything for GIFs. Yet.

I just wonder why it is that if someone doesn’t like something that person is immediately labeled as an old fogey or a computer illiterate or narrow-minded, etc. That attitude is pretty tiresome and it really does make SOME of us hostile to both the attitude and the something that we don’t like. Also, what is the reason for not requiring a click to run the doodads? Does that interfere with doodad freedom or what?

I use a Chrome-compatible browser, and the easiest way to stop gifs playing is to install this extension, written by Google:

Once you’ve installed it, click on the lightning bolt icon and choose

  • Allow all animated images.
  • Allow animated images, but only once.
  • Disable all image animation.

If you’re not using Chrome, I suggest you google how to stop animations in whichever browser you’re using.

Ah, hah! I have that, and the damn thing got reset to allow all animations. Now changed to allow them only once.

(I have a LOT of plugins, it’s hard to remember what’s what sometimes.)

I think that label mainly fits those who think an extremely common feature that has been in use for more than 20 years on popular and long-lived websites is a new trend that kills websites.

I fully agree.

Except that @kayT didn’t say that it was a new trend or that it killed websites.

When you’re finished knocking down straw men, and insulting people who have different opinions or preferences from you, you might consider that the question is whether or not it’s appropriate for this board, and why.

I’ve explained why I think it’s not a good idea. Would you like to explain what value you think it adds to the board?

Well, you know, Discord has animated GIFs. You can actually select from a library of them which they helpfully provide. And all the kool kids are using Discord these days…

I’d prefer they had to be clicked on to animate. Unbidden movement like that both triggers a jolt of PTSD that is outside of my conscious control as well as is exhausting to my brain to process as I have had several traumatic brain injuries and it is busy enough already doing visual processing just reading. So between PTSD and TBI I’d rather not have them popping up without being deliberately clicked on.

Just one voice from the forest. It’s not because I’m grey, a fogey or stodgy. I’m one of the three, but only one.

Looking at your avatar, I’m guessing…grey?

It’s similar for me. I find any flashing or moving element on any website physically unpleasant and irritating. I find it difficult to read or focus on anything else if there’s a moving element on the page.

You got it in one….again.

Yay-I’ve gotten something right twice!

They never had the ability to. Now that they CAN I expect we will see a lot more reaction gifs, and I’m super excited for it!
