You convinced me. I finally installed Slimjet. It was a hassle. First, there are links to every major retailer that has to be deleted from the front page. Then I had to add all my adblockers and scriptblockers. Then some websites don’t work on it. But at least the animations here stopped, so there’s that.
Thanks for all the info about it. It’s nice to have the option.
Not so much evidence, just perhaps a guess. shrug
Likewise, have we seen any evidence offered that gifs will make this place fail, or turn people away? We always got those predictions in the past, when there were changes, IIRC. That we’d end up with tons of texting teens, people smothering the place with goatse, the conversation would go downhill rapidly, etc. It never happened. Life went on just as before. (And one thing that cracks me up – some of the staunchest anti-avatar posters now USE avatars. Go figure)
But I guess we’ll just have to agree to disagree. No big deal.
Name me one place that isn’t like this because I’d love to post there. Everywhere I’ve posted, people have been talking about how much better they are than everyone else. That’s just human nature and tribalism. Animated gifs doesn’t change that. one way or the other.
If animations are your idea of “dire”, well, I don’t know what to say. There were people claiming we’d have nothing but texting teens, the quality of conversation would go down, because you know, we “use our words here”, that there would be people using goatse and tubgirl as avatars, etc. NONE of that happened.
Animations? That has nothing to do with avatars, that’s a result of the new format of Discourse allowing them. If we still using the old VB software, we probably wouldn’t, even though we had avatars.
