The argument that Trump will do whatever he wants and no one can stop him is really fucking boring

Only if you are right wing.

Conservatism consists of exactly one proposition, to wit: There must be in-groups whom the law protects but does not bind, alongside out-groups whom the law binds but does not protect.

Still bored?

Yeah. I don’t think even the staunchest defenders of the title’s sentiment will be back to the thread any time soon.
[/quote] Agree. I don’t think that the pollyannaish belief that the constitution will keep everything peachy can continue to be convincing.

From an article in The Atlantic by Adam Serwer ( The Constitutional Crisis Is Here - The Atlantic):

“…if the Trump administration can defy court orders with impunity, and Congress is unwilling to act, there is no reason for it to respect the constitutional rights of American citizens either. The Roberts Court will now have to decide whether to side with the Constitution or with a lawless president asserting the power to disappear people at will. This is not a power that any person, much less an American president, is meant to have.”

You rang?

We’re not quite at a crisis point yet. The admin is engaged in what anyone who’s spent any amount of time playing D&D would call rules-lawyering - they’re poking at finer details of terms like “facilitate the release of” to see what they can get away with without technically violating the Supreme Court’s ruling.

Now if the courts clarify their ruling to say the government must do something specific to bring Garcia home and they still don’t comply, and the courts refuse to start holding people in contempt or are prevented from doing so, THEN it will be Time To Panic. We’re not quite there yet.

Naive.

Yep. As I posted in another thread, Trump is committing at least 16 of the 27 grievances in the Declaration of Independence.

If I’m naive, then indicate exactly what part of the Supreme Court’s ruling the admin is explicitly acting in defiance of.

The Supreme Court is part of the problem. They have been enabling autocracy the entire time, as has Congress. I really can’t be fucked to go Googling for specifics at this point. You’ll find out soon enough.

Now that the Trump administration has broken the dam on ignoring court orders, here’s another one:

I had to squint hard enough while trying to find the administration’s ‘plausible claim’ in that one that I now have a splitting headache.

I wonder if RFK, Jr. will let me take an aspirin. Hm.

But the leopards would never eat their faces. They’re SCOTUS.

There’s not a thing the judiciary can do to stop the MAGA presidency. They can issue rulings. They can hope that voters who participate in future elections take their opinions into consideration and align with them, but that’s it.

No, they cite people for contempt of court and place people in jail!

Sure, kid.

Your denialism is impressive, I’ll say that.

The USA is at the crisis point. Beyond any doubt or question.

66 million years ago. Somewhere in the Yucatan. Smaptisaurus be like, Aw, come on, dude, it’s just Haley’s Comet doing its thing.

So you’re saying we have another million years before things get bad?

Trump is likely to fold on this within a week. It’s hurting his approval ratings, which are the only thing he cares about at this point. All it’ll take is for him to think of a way to claim all the credit for “saving” Garcia.

The Chicxulub Impactor, but your point has been missed and, somehow, dismissed already.

The MAGAmenace doesn’t give a damn about his approval ratings. He’s been elected and he’s got a Congress that won’t impeach him. He’s got free reign to trash the Constitution for at least two years and maybe a lot longer.

And he’s just getting started.

Imagine a rewrite of Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory, where one bad kid with all the attributes of all the original bad kids gets all the tickets, steals the one ticket from the good kid, then cons Wonka into giving him the factory.

Of course he does. Ratings are literally the only thing that has ever mattered to him his entire life. He needs desperately to be loved. That’s the entire reason he ever ran for president to begin with.

He’s got his MAGAtrash MAGAfans. His cult following. That’s all the approval he needs and cares about.
