That’s precisely the tactic. We saw this with Jill Stein when, after Medhi Hassan dragged her over coals for refusing to say that Putin was a war criminal, she came back and tweeted:
We condemn all war criminals including Benjamin Netanyahu, Vladimir Putin, Bashar al-Assad, Joe Biden, Kamala Harris, Donald Trump, Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, George W. Bush, Dick Cheney & many more.
If hyperbole about torture and mass incarceration without due process is too distracting, then lets go with euphemisms.
Do you think these relocation centers are a problem? Do you have any ideas about what common people should do to stop them, because I don’t. I can protest to a bunch of people that agree with me. I can write my congress person, who agrees with me, but also doesn’t seem to know what to do.
Obviously, when it comes time, I can vote for candidates who at least promise to close the relocation centers.
I mean, do I think (gestures broadly at everything) is a problem? Yeah, if you scroll up far enough in this thread you’ll see me lament that our country as we know it is effectively over. We can hope that in 2026 Democrats can take over congress and go on an impeachment frenzy, but I think we’re all just kinda fucked. We’re a failed democracy. Lots of people globally live in failed democracies. It sucks. I’m just trying to cope by nitpicking posts on the internet.
It’s not a death camp and our country is now an oligarchical dictatorship committing flagrant human rights violations left and right. Both of those things are true.
No. The Democrats are the party of the status quo; they are better than the Republicans because they won’t make things worse. They also refuse to fix any of the damage the Republicans do.
There is no political party for making things better in the US. Only the party of slow decay and the party of evil.
Yes, he signed orders, but 6 years later there were still people being held there. If I remember correctly, those first two years the Democrats held the House and Senate.
Attention Democrats in Congress: Republicans can stop a Democrat president from doing things, but Democrats can’t stop a Republican president. Don’t whine about not being the majority, or whatever, that never stopped the Republicans from creating all kinds of holdups on things the president wants to do.
I guess what Obama missed is he could’ve just moved everyone out of Guantanamo and started processing them however he saw fit. I mean, if a president can seize people without warrants or due process, then releasing people should be a breeze.
Seriously, for the last 20 years of Democratic presidents, the Republicans managed to delay and impede, even when they were in the minority. I guess the Democrats learned nothing from that.
Can your mind handle some exaggeration without being distracted from the real problem? If I take a sip of my tea and say it is boiling, do you understand that all I mean is that it’s too hot, not that it’s 202F? Do you understand that when people say death camps they are not only expressing their disgust with the relocation centers, but also their fear that the distance between an extralegal torture facility where people happen to die and mass executions is not that far?
The problem is that when you call them “death camps” now, as hyperbole, then when they turn into actual death camps in the future, it’s going to be that much harder to get people to take you seriously about it, and not dismiss you as using more hyperbole.
That’s the kind of thing people have been saying for years, but all that happens is that the Republicans keep getting away with worse and worse things while their opponents basically help them by soft-pedaling what the Republicans are doing.
Yeah, I and many other people have been calling Republicans ‘fascists’ since the '80s. Now that we have actual fascists running the country, the word is ineffective or ignored.
It was always ignored, because everyone screamed “Godwin! Godwin!” every time the word fascism was used to describe something. The problem isn’t that the term was overused, the problem was that it was made into a taboo.
Let us say that you are absolutely right that no nastiness on the part of Trump and his cohorts can possibly happen.
I never said that Trump can’t do anything, but people seem less interested in talking about the things he can do (tariffs, reinstate the family separation policy, make life generally harder than it needs to be for LGBT people and minorities, etc.) than things he can’t do (put major cities under military government, mass deportations of legal immigrants, end birthright citizenship, arrest and/or execute Democratic politicians or civil servants, etc.).
Really Amapti, he’s doing all the things you said he can’t do except for last, but he does fire or investigate them, even John

My favorite Smapti post is here…….actually it’s only the last line.
On April 15, our delusional friend posted
If Trump is even still president three months from now I’ll be greatly surprised.
That was possibly the wrongest thing ever posted here, and it goes to show just how deep he fell into into the Raw Story hahahaha one redneck in Idaho expressed doubts about Trump and that means he’ll be gone any day now delusions.
