The argument that Trump will do whatever he wants and no one can stop him is really fucking boring

Looking at his profile, he hasn’t posted since August 2. I know he’s had health problems. Anyone know if he’s okay?

Trump isn’t qualified to be a Wal-Mart greeter.

That he inherited 600 million is sad. It’s sad for Donald. He could have lived a life of absolute luxury, no one would care who he is.

Instead, he chose to be a bully and make other peoples lives a living hell. I guess for fun.

He’s got a thread of his own:

Per his last post, it’ll probably be another week or two before he posts again.

Thanks. I don’t visit MPSIMS much, so that was news to me.

This. The concept of not being allowed to leave your country, forged exit visas, sneaking through subway tunnels out of East Berlin, all that is a relic of the Cold War. Far more, what does and will continue to keep people where they are is that they don’t have another country to go to.

It would be almost as hard for me, an American with no recent EU ancestors–I mean not for centuries–to move to eastern Germany today as it would have been for an East Berliner to get out East Germany during the Cold War.

I may have posted this on this site; I don’t remember. But, it’s a mistake to think we fought against fascism during World War II. We didn’t. In one theater, we fought for revenge against the power that attacked us. In the other theater, we fought against particular fascists. Now that we have, as you say, actual fascists running our government, that should be incedibly obvious.

So, now he has the Pentagon … THE PENTAGON … planning a deployment of troops in Chicago and other cities (democratic) that he didn’t specify in his statement I saw last night. So, yeah, he can pretty much do whatever he wants. He has Congress and the Supreme Court. There is no one who can stop him.

I wonder what would happen if we put a wall of state police in front of them to prevent them from entering our city. Would he order the troops to fire on them, and would they? He’s fast becoming the first dictator of the totally divided United States of America.

Perhaps something like that would open a few eyes. I could also backfire terribly. Trump will just up the ante. The State Police against the National Guard? The US Army?

I agree that “upping the ante” is his personality type, and I agree it would be a slaughter. I also think, however, that it would shock and awaken even the most intellectually comatose, reality TV addicted people among us. Given that, I think there are still enough sane people left in Washington to stop it from happening. No general in the Pentagon would give that order, and I think many of the soldiers sent would refuse to fire on fellow Americans, especially if they didn’t fire first.

I hope you’re right.

An anecdote - I know a fellow that joined the NG. He’s a banker in real life. When the Black Lives Matter demonstrations where starting, he said, “Yeah, I might have to go to DC and crack some skulls”.

I’m not confident that they don’t want a repeat of Kent State. Or much, much worse.

“When all you have is a hammer, everything looks like a nail”

Or a firing pin :frowning:

I suspect most state police would side with the troops and Trump would quickly federalize them.

The fellow I mentioned that joined the NG wanted to join the Army Rangers. One of the most elite units out there.

He was ~35 years old and out of shape bank vice president. Umm, no, that’s not going to happen.

I will say one thing, the NG got his ass in shape. At least physically.

No, it won’t and no, they won’t.

Yeah, experience points to that if given the order to crack down, LEOs and military members will most often carry it out , even on “their own people”. Mutiny is the exception, not the rule.

STILL bored?

I can’t tell you how fucking bored I am!

In a laundromat midway between Fort Lewis and Seattle in 1999, I overheard a soldier trying to impress a woman by describing how he’d beaten demonstrators during the WTO protests earlier that week. In any such situations, there will be flawed individuals like this to sparks the powder keg.

Unless Trump and Hegseth have thoroughly replaced every competent senior military commander with their toadies, there might be hope at that level. Because at that level there is more political acumen than just following orders and kissing ass. They know, or should know, that politicians put them there to act tough, but then use them as scapegoats after they actually do so. It’s what happened to General Nelson Miles after the Pullman Strikes and MacArthur after the Bonus March.

It could go either way. During the Bloody Sunday massacre in Derry, there was one especially kill-crazy squaddie who set things in motion for thirty years of murder. He ended up in front of an Angolan firing squad a few years later: kharma. American hero Chris Kyle bragged about shooting Katrina looters, and he was bullshitting; but we have General Russell Honore on video bellowing at his troops to “put those damn weapons down!”

If the military would go after the most dangerous agency of anarchy and destruction, I think we know where they might best be deployed. But that is even more something too far to believe. At the moment.

Just to make sure we’re all on the same page: these troops are going to be deployed through the mid-term elections to ensure that these states don’t vote for Democrats. We’ve seen our last real elections in the US. DC was a practice run and it went off without any resistance.

Agree. Blue region leaders will be rolling a big set of dice if they try to use local law enforcement to stand against the feds. The boys in blue (heh) are extremely Trumpy already and would love an excuse to show their true loyalty.
