The Artform You Could Live Without

I’d say that aything with a judged element is not a sport. It may be an athletic event but if it doesn’t have an objective winner, it ain’t a sport.

Comic books and movies based on comic books.

I just Googled to make sure I was correct that figure skating is scored based on “technical ability” and “program component”. The “program component” side includes artistic interpretation, and is therefore necessarily subjective.

Are you kidding? They sell them coloring books in my hip artisanal local organic co-op. They are everywhere.

I can live without virtually every art form that is popular today but if I could eliminate the ones most difficult to avoid (blaring rap, modern public sculpture and architecture), those would be my first choice.

Games, ffs. Is Monopoly an art form? Look at all the drawings and little sculptures!

I’ll skip marvelously sculpted and decorated musical instruments too fragile to play. A 2x4 electric guitar is just fine with me, especially good for crushing rats. Rather like my Martin Backpacker guitar that doubles as a canoe paddle.

Other needless artforms: Most body decorations. Most unaccompanied singing. Most pet hairstylings. Most tattoos. Most banjoists and harmonica blowers. Most poetry read aloud. Some naked public performances can be okay.

Rio, you have anticipated the next thread I plan to post. Think dogs in coats…

My MIL has gone past tuneless humming and putters around the kitchen performing tuneless scat singing. No melodies, just deedles, dydles, dooldes, and doot doots. It’s incredibly annoying, but she’s my MIL, so I must accept it.

One of these days the smartest and the hippest will read the OP carefully and respond to the question that is actually being asked.
But today is not that day.

Tomorrow isn’t looking great either.

Thanks. I’ll admit that my usual idea of those events is the judge marking points off for a foot being placed wrong or a wobble when they land so that’s how I perceive them. In any event, while I’ll agree that some events have artistic components, that doesn’t extend to the major competitive televised team sports.

Who are these people and where may we find them?

There are competitive and non-competitive sports, and neither is art.

Game design is certainly an art form. Playing games, not so much.

I’m not sure you can be that emphatic without redefining all forms of art involving body moment as sports. What is it that makes ballet an art and figure skating a sport? Different shoes?

Ballet (art), no competition; figure skating (sport), competition.

How about Rap Battles?

Oh, definitely not art. Not in my house.

Artforms I wouldn’t miss:

RAP - (after Meredith Wilson)
Tattooing
Political prevarication

Your comment deserves a better response. I still disagree, because you’re talking about a specific situation and not an art form. There have always been battles of the bands or of individual musicians, and that certainly is competition, so I’ll concede that.
