XTC - “Dear God”
It may be unfair to label XTC a one-hit wonder, but they never had any mainstream chart success in the U.S. “Dear God” is likely their song that got the most exposure in the U.S.; the video won Billboard’s Best Video Award, and was nominated for three MTV Video Music Awards.
Yeah, XTC had several hits: “Senses Working Overtime” (#38 on US charts), “Generals and Majors” (#28), and “Mayor of Simpleton” (#15). But I can’t think of another “X” top 40 song or artist which fits the theme of a one-hit wonder.
Assuming you’re looking at their discography on Wikipedia, those numbers are from the column for “US Main,” which is Billboard’s “Mainstream Rock” chart. Billboard’s primary popular music chart, the “Hot 100,” is two columns to the left, and just labeled “US” – it’s that chart which is usually used to define a top 40 hit, a #1 hit, etc. On that chart, XTC never got higher than #72 (“Mayor of Simpleton”).
