The Beatles were overrated

John Lennon especially. Pompous wanker.

Wow. That was convincing.
Next time, show your work.

Shouldn’t we be in CS or GD?

Anyway, reasonable minds can differ. FWIW, I’m a fan.

Most overrated band in history, apparently.

Check which forum we’re in, Einstein. My post was was mundane, pointless, and I felt I must share it. Case. Closed.

First, anything related to the arts belongs in Cafe Society. I’ll move the thread.

Second, watch your tone. Snarky insults are prohibited except in the Pit forum. No warning Issued.

It’s about a music group. Cafe Society.
It’s about the greatness and influence of a music group. Great Debates.

I will agree that claiming the Beatles are overrated is rather pointless.

Oh for goodness sake, I didn’t want a discussion, I don’t want debate, I wanted to share something mundane and POINTLESS. Why did you move it out of the most appropriate forum? Jeez.

Either move it back or just close it please. Double plus eyeroll.

Being a Beatles denier is hard work.
You’ll just have to carry that weight.

I agree! Also, Rush and Grateful Dead.

It doesn’t work that way here.

Then get a blog. Or post a tweet.

You posted here because you you knew it would get more attention.

I suggest you read the forum descriptions. Cafe Society is where all discussions of the arts (no matter how expansive or trivial they are) belong.

In addition, discussion of moderator actions belongs over PM/email or in ATMB, not in the thread being moderated.

Finally, you need to moderate your tone, or you will get warnings instead of mod notes. So drop this here, and if you don’t care about this thread anymore, simply don’t post in it.

ETA: I’ll let the Cafe Society mods take it from here.

While I personally don’t consider them to be “gods” as some do, and I believe many of their contributions to popular music as a whole would have inevitably occurred eventually from someone else, it is an unavoidable and undeniable fact that they DID make those contributions, and they consistently produced near-universally popular, high-quality, and continually varied and evolving music throughout their careers. They are consistently ranked at or very near the top of any “greatest bands of all time” list and they are, by almost any measure, not over- or under-, but rather rated just right.
ETA: And even if John Lennon was a pompous wanker, he earned the right to be. If you’re looking for someone who definitely is a pompous wanker, and is not talented enough to back it up, see Sting.

You’re not my friend anymore!

The Beatles were innovators. They are not “overrated” in the traditional sense of the word. The fact that they innovated many concepts of rock can’t be denied. But putting them on a pedestal because of the fact that they were innovative is what is problematic. The Beatles did many amazing things, but later bands took what they did and did it better.

But would they have done it at all? Once someone does something new, it can be examined for improvement.

Even Newton said he saw further because he stood on the shoulders of giants.

I’ve heard of them. (music group from a couple decades back, right?) But I can’t agree they’re over rated – hell, I can’t even find anything by them on Youtube.

Don’t we do this discussion like every year so? It sure feels like it.

Here, I’ll hold your glasses.
