I did not know of the Oklahoma Onion Burger before your post. For those, like me, who didn’t / don’t know of this yummy invention by this name: oklahoma onion burger - Google Search
It seems the recent incarnations are simply a burger with silly amounts of thinly sliced grilled onions on it. Which sounds fantastic, but is also common as toast all over this country.
In fact the Google search for that dish auto-converts to “fried onion burger”. But I suppose, like Buffalo wings, the idea can certainly be called a success when it’s ubiquitous. Shame the rest of the country doesn’t remember El Reno as they do Buffalo. Then again I’ve been to El Reno; kinda easy to forget.
Not dead, but very, very close. See Bennigan’s - Wikipedia for more. Including mention of the famous Monte Cristo.
I remember eating those in HS & college (~1970-1980, a bit before their heyday), but not much afterwards. I don’t think it was necessarily at Bennigans though.
I’ve eaten quite a few Monte Cristos at other restaurants. In fact, my wife and my step-daughters actively search for restaurants that offer MCs and send me information about them. (“When you come up to CT to visit next year, we can go to X Restaurant for an MC. It’s only 90 minutes away from our house.”) I’ve even tried to make them at home, which I’ve described in another post somewhere.
Alas, Bennigan’s spoiled me. It’s like finding the perfect pizza, though I understand that tastes vary and other people may disagree.
If my wife was working late or seeing friends, I’d sometimes stop by my Bennigan’s and get a take-out MC. Then I’d eat it in my car in the parking lot so I wouldn’t take the evidence home.
