You mean the one where suddenly the Star Fleet’s premier space ship doesn’t have a single JAG attached, nor is there a single JAG in residence on the starbase they are visiting, so the only JAG around (visiting, as I recall) ends up being a judge, and so Data has to be defended by Picard and prosecuted by Riker? THAT episode??:dubious: :smack:
(Not to mention the simple fact that the BoP is on Picard to show Data HAS consciousness, not on Riker to show he doesn’t, and Picard utterly fails that burden).
Yes, the underlying theme was good, and the examination of whether or not we want to create robotic slaves is something worth exploring. But doing so in a dipshit way is disappointing; I was disappointed at the time, and still am. The fact that the director considers it a minor masterpiece says more about the troubles I have with the Next Generation (and shows like it) than anything I could ever say.
The frustrating thing about Voyager is that the writers clearly knew how to do that darker, more realistic show - and they could do it very well. “Year of Hell” was everything Voyager should have been - the ship was damaged and stayed damaged barely limping along, morale was shot, and so on. Compelling stuff. And at the end of the episode - hurray! Reset button.
"Captain Phillipa Louvois: [in response to Commander Riker’s refusal to prosecute Data’s case] Then I will rule summarily based on my findings. Data is a toaster. Have him report immediately to Commander Maddox for experimental refit.
Well, as I said, we’re just getting warmed up. Parts of it are fantastic (and yeah, we started with the mini-series), I just find the whole storyline with the brilliant scientist (who reminds me way too much of Bashir) and the stupid femme-fatale Cylon makes me want to punch the writers. It’s way too gimmicky for a show that otherwise is very mature.) The whiny Asian girl… Boomer? She gets on my nerves a little too. Starbuck is totally bad-ass though.
I notice that a lot of people hate Neelix from Voyager, and I don’t get it. He’s funny looking and at times mildly annoying, but he’s no coward. He strong-armed the Kazon in the very first episode to rescue Kes for Chrissake. Despite the fact that the crew pretty much shit on him 24/7, he made a lot of valuable contributions and was pretty damn smart and resourceful. I think he was one of the best characters. One of my favorite Voyager eps is when Neelix has an NDE and becomes suicidal because he no longer believes in God. He also dealt with the genocide of his people. He carried a lot of heavy shit in that series and I think he did it well.
(I also loved 7 of 9, my favorite Star Trek character ever second only to Jadzia Dax. Voyager as a whole was weak-sauce compared to the other Treks, but it was still Star Trek and did interesting, worthwhile things with its storylines.)
DS9 is still tops for me, and one of those reasons is because of Dax. I’m a very character-driven person, I guess. I loved the whole concept of Trills and Jadzia was so badass and full of generations of wisdom and yet totally flawed. Fucking loved her. I think I had a brain aneurysm when they killed her (I watched the series years after it was popular, so I didn’t catch any media buzz or have any warning at all.) I think I went into shock when the episode ended. I kept waiting for the inevitable, ‘‘Haha, just kidding, she’s not dead’’ and it never happened. Poor Worf. She didn’t even die an honorable death. Fuck!
Um, nope. He was PEOPLE Magazine’s#18 most sexy person in 1997. In fact, that’s the reason his character didn’t get written out when Jeri Ryan (Seven of Nine) was, and Jenifer Lien (Kes) did.
Anyone think there is a chance of another Star Trek series that will pick up where TNG, DS9, and Voyager have left off? The last series and movie have been in the past. I prefer my Star Trek to advance beyond what has already happened.
I doubt it. I think they really went about as far as they could with the old franchise which is probably why they had the motion picture reboot.
Odesio
Sure! We could totally have cross-over movies where the crew from DS9 gets sucked through a timeholerift and has to team up with the new Kirk and Spock!
It could be done if the series had a definitive arc. Not the episodic way Trek used in the past, and not an arc that lasts only a season. Something like B5, I’d think, where theres a story to be told that spans the episodes. I said that badly.
If they were to make another series based off of the reboot from the movies, I’d prefer to have a ship that isn’t the Enterprise. I know I’m only that probably feels that way, but I’d like to see another crew and ship and leave newKirk and crew to the movies.
Yeah, some Maquis guys, semi legitimate freight haulers, thieves and con men, with run ins with Federation ships, avoiding the Cardassians. And oh yes, an arc.
And a young girl trained by the Fed as an ultimate weapon but whose brother and Mal (new Kirk) rescue and have a cute girly engineer and a Spock/Data/Book type character …
