“Inoffensive” - yeah, that’s how I’d describe the Rosemount cab/shir blend. Soft, round, not complex.

I think the best way to expand your horizons is to do a tasting. Doesn’t have to be big or fancy - just get a few friends together and open a few bottles. If you want to add some interest, put each wine in a paper bag, so you don’t know what you’re trying.
If you’re just starting out with wine, don’t go with one style. What you’re looking for is something that demonstrates that different types of wines taste different. In the price range you’re looking in, I’d suggest a Beaujolais - DuBoeuf makes a lot of them that are around $10. Also try something like the Falesco Vitiano or Argiolas (or both) that I suggest in my previous post. Or just go to a wine shop (as opposed to a grocery store) and ask them to recommend a few bottles that will give you different experiences.
I guarantee that you’ll come away with a new understanding of what you like and how not all red wines are the same. Even non-wine-drinkers have fun doing this - I can’t tell you how many times I’ve heard people say “I thought all red wine tasted the same until I did this.”
