The Big Bang Theory 12/6--The Fish Guts Displacement

I’m really glad the writers didn’t make Howard into a gambling savant. It’s way too easy to fall into the trope of nerd + casino = easy win. Obviously that’s not true IRL, so I’m glad they steered clear.

As soon as Howard said he was not a stranger to dice games, I expected him to bring up his experience rolling twenty-sided dice in D&D (provoking some kind of good grief response from the FIL) but Yahtzee was funny too.

Oh, I remembered that episode - Penny’s expression was priceless. But that was incidental, even accidental boobage; there was no sexual subtext.

Rubbing Vick’s Vap-O-Rub all over AFF’s hooters is a different ballgame altogether. That has a big honkin’ sexual subtext that would be immediately obvious to everyone. Except, of course, Sheldon.

What I found a little out-of-character was Sheldon’s response to Amy’s illness. He’ s a misophobe - I expected him to take one look at her red nose and watery eyes, and flee like a Baptist at a Pride parade.

I was a little disappointed that the Father-in-law told Howard that his wife made him go - that was perfectly obvious from her stare at the dinner table and felt like it lessened the earlier scene. However, it did lead to the great line “You’re an Astronaut and your wife makes you do things, and she’s only four feet tall!”

Yeah, that was a great line!

I agree. But he made a commitment in writing and the relationship agreement is sacred. It might have been a nice touch had they had him in surgical mask/gloves and spraying Lysol everywhere.

I found it hard to believe the Howard, Raj and Leonard were so squicked out by a fish getting gutted.

Ooh, yeah! Good call. That would have been funny and perfectly in character.

Leonard faints at the sight of blood.

Did they ever address why Amy changed her tune? Originally she tried holding Sheldon’s hand and declared that they had no chemistry. But now she gets ridiculously hot and bothered by him.

I think Amy has been slowly changed by what she sees in Penny and Bernadette’s lives.

He did have a little bottle of purell to disinfect his hands. Which he did after he took her temperature.

i think it’s been bit by but. she did tell the other girls she had a five year plan.

The writers of the show are living in a world where 60 million women have bought the 50 Shades of Grey trilogy. I know that any BDSM activity, however consensual, is a problem for some people but it seems silly for the writers to ignore the most popular sex book in the history of the world on a show with a sex pun in the title. They also gave it the best treatment we’ll probably ever see on a sitcom. Compared to the crushingly boring cliches of the Howard/Mike half of the show, Amy’s manipulation of Sheldon was a masterpiece of character.

Still a poor episode overall, but I’m giving the writers credit for trying.

One thing I noticed was the the opening prologue*, with the Spider-Man theme jokes, did not work very well at all. It seemed like it might’ve been a quick-fix replacement scene for whatever used to be there.

*Not sure if that’s the right term to use.

I guess I am clueless, what is the sexual pun in Fish guts displacement?

Is this whoosh? It’s the name of the show, not the episode.

no woosh, just more clueless than I thought. I thought when he said title, he was referencing the episode not the series. :smack:

“Cold open,” if you want to sound all hip and with it.

That’s the bunny! I knew I knew it, but my mind went blank. “Coda” was the only word that popped into my head, and, it turns out, is the bit at the end.
