Dopers - in the James Weldon Johnson song, Lift Ev’ry Voice and Sing, the last stanza ends with an oath of fidelity - “True to our God, true to our native land.” Does anyone know what land James Weldon Johnson was referring to? The U.S.A. or some native home in Africa? Either way, it’s a stirring song, but do we know his intent? thanks.
