the blind spot

Is there a way to adjust your rear-view and side-view mirrors to get rid of the blind spot? It never fails that at least once a month I get ready to move over to the left or right and get honked at. There must be somewhere where the two connect and along with what you can see directly out of your window function to make it that you get a view of everything alongside the left side of your car. Is there? Thanks.

Laid out in excruciating detail by Click and Clack, the Tappet brothers:

Do NOT miss their show, the funniest thing on radio since the Goon show.

There are smaller mirrors (say 4" diameter) designed for this purpose. You attach them to your side mirrors and you should be able to see fairly well along the side of your vehicle. Check your local automotive store.

Interestingly enough, I came up with that exact same mirror setup myself, when I realized that my side mirrors should actually look to the side. Now I can see any car around me without having to turn my head more than, say, 45 degrees to either side.

The Click and Clack article is pretty neat – maybe I’ll try it out myself.

But, uh, dopetalker, why don’t you simply check your blind spots? It never fails that several times a month someone tries to move into my lane while I’m already there (not hanging out – attempting to pass), and I have to honk at them for not checking their blind spots.

Me too. I never understood the conventional “wisdom” behind the typically recommended setup. I just adjust my mirrors when I’m at a traffic light on a 4 lane road and have a car next to me to use as a guide.
