The Bone Marrow Transplant (July 11th)

I registered with a marrow donor program years ago, but I don’t think it was NMDP. I think I will pursue registering with them now. Thanks for the info.

Best wishes to mère Roninelope!

Does she have to be in the hospital during that entire stay?

No she doesn’t, she’ll be in the hospital for at least 3 week and then she’ll be able to live in Houston (we have an apartment) for two more months and she’ll make daily trips to the hospital.

For a year after this she has to avoid fresh fruits and veggies and sushi, she has to be extremely aware of germs and such. And she’ll be on some meds for the rest of her life.

In October she’ll be able to return to Orlando

Just curious: Why the year-long prohibition against fresh fruits and veggies and sushi? I’m coming up totally blank on a reasonable explanation, although I know there is on.

My understanding is that it is for concern over germs.

I’m sure it’s something to do with a compromised immune system, as my coworker’s husband had a similar restriction when his white cell count was below a certain level during his fight with leukemia. I think there was something with lunch meats as well… something to do with Listeria.

Glad to hear the first day went well. Keep us posted.
