Sorry. I didn’t believe I was hijacking an “unrelated thread.” The OP, An Gadaí, mentioned that there was some unrest and displeasure with the Queen visiting Ireland.
I mentioned that similar unrest was planned when other members of said royal family will be visiting Canada this summer, yes specifically in Quebec. When questioned on it I provided a link to a news story about The Reseau de resistance du Quebec, and their plan to “make the royal couple’s first official Canadian tour as ‘unpleasant as possible.’”
I have no dislike for Quebec. This is MPSIMS. I was responding in kind to the OP.
I shall leave here now, and really don’t get what, if anything I did incorrectly.
To a person, every Canuck Anglophone I’ve ever spoken to who’s voiced an opinion on Francophones/Quebecers (and my apologies for pegging anyone wrong, as I understand it ‘Quebecois’ is any Quebec resident regardless) has spoken of them glowingly. Those Anglos who work side by side w/ Francophones in Quebec seem to do so happily and outside of Quebec I’ve only heard kind things said; heck I know one Anglo who spoke of knowing Francophone women in much the same way Jimmy Carter wanted to know the Polish people.
An Gadai, I’m so glad you started this thread! When I saw the pictures yesterday of HRM I was surprised to see her dressed in green; isn’t that some kind of big deal?
I was happy to hear that HRH was generally met with good graces and hope this will begin a better relationship between two neighboring nations. I hear that she is visting the Guinness HQ today to witness the pouring of a pint. She won’t partake being a teatotaler (new information for me), but few things are more ‘Irish’ than Guinness so at least she is making the effort.
Meh, it’s part of Diageo’s product portfolio. I find the international emphasis on Guinness as this amazing Irish thing depressing. It’s somewhat akin to talking about “Coca-cola!” when you meet an American.
I didn’t know she was teetotal, she obviously didn’t take after her ma in that regard!
You missed an opportunity to say “talking about poitín in the next thread about poutine.”
In a news article I saw, she said she didn’t want to impair her judgment so early in the day. Because a few sips of 4.2% would leave her reeling? It also said that Phillip “gazed at the brew with obvious longing,” which I can really picture.
Well now, she’s an 85-year-old with a busy schedule and limited opportunities for toilet breaks — if she prefers to err on the side of caution, I can’t honestly blame her.
Though it does sound more like a polite way of saying “No thanks, I can’t abide the stuff”. I believe her tastes run more towards the occasional glass of Mateus Rosé.
Prince Phillip is known to enjoy a can of John Smiths with his lunch, though, when he can get it. I’m sure a Guinness would be right up his street.
I don’t have to admit anything. To be honest, I was kinda touched by her wreath-laying at the Garden of Remembrance. Anyway, I’m anti-monarchist (in all countries). I find it interesting that a sectarian and in the most specific sense, racist, institution is allowed be the figurehead of a great modern nation. Anyway this is straying a wee bit too much into Great Debates territory. Let’s have a bit of Jerusalem.
