The Broken Guitar in My Closet

After messing around with the pickup for a while last night I figured out that I may need to get some glue in order to re-assemble it. For the most part the magnets hold everything in place but there’s just enough slippage in it to make things move about.

Then there’s the lead wiring issue. The black wires are electrically joined and the two red wires are loose. My guess is that a series connection with one red wire connected to the ground plate and shield wire and the other red connected to the lead wire is the way to go.

I’ve done a little bit of research on connections but most on line instructions refer to specific wiring harnesses coming from specific pickups. None really explain the wiring of the internal configuration of the pickup. So while the instructions might say to connect the red, yellow, black, white wires from the harness to the controls none of them show the polarity or internal connections of the two coils in a humbucker.
Oh well, it’s a busy week for me but I hope to get some time some evenings to test out the humbucker with a proto-type mounting bracket. I’ll report back on any progress.

I’ve had this guitar for going on 18 months now and have had issues with the pick up from day 1

Maybe its an occupational hazard, I don’t know, I just thought I would ask on here to see if anyone could shed any light on it

The pick up hums to holy hell with both electric and acoustic strings on it. I used to play live with it but I had to stop because sound engineers did nothing but complain about this hum and the fact the channel in which the guitar was DI’ed to had to be cranked to the top to get anything that even resembled a level out of it. So I started plugging it into Fender Deluxe to see if that would stop the hum but the hum can still be heard. Its hardly unnoticeable either. It cuts through the mix to the point where you can still hear it clearly even when strumming heavy.

However, the hum disappears if I turn the tone knob to 0 but this isn’t an option as it doesn’t compliment my overall tone at all.

I’ve thought about giving up on this and selling it but it was a gift so its not really an option. Truly amazing guitar until you plug it in.

Is this just the ‘nature of the beast’ with this pick up, or is it a factory defect that I could get repaired under warranty.

A lot of people in this thread seem to know what they are doing when it comes to pick ups and it would be great if someone could help me out

What kind guitar is it?

When you get a lot of hum, you typically need to check the wiring of the guitar and also the amp and the location. If you get the buzz when you plug into other amps in other locations, then it’s the guitar. At that point, you should have someone check the wiring - perhaps you have a short, or the ground wire is not probably soldered. It can be something very simple, once you isolate the cause.
