I have in recent months heard the claim that California has the fourth (sometimes third) largest economy in the world. Presumably one and two would be the rest of the USA and China. This would mean, however, that California would have a larger economy than several OECD nations with considerably larger populations. The UK, France and Italy all have about 1.5 times the population of the golden state; Germany is 2x and Japan is 3x larger. Am I right to be skeptical of this claim?
3rd is Germany and is significantly less than US & China.

From what I can find California does come in slightly ahead or slightly behind of Japan. They’re listed around $4.3 Trillion.

Say that the population of California is a rounded 40 million. That would make the GDP per capita $107,500, slightly more than the US average. Sounds right.
If you exclude the US itself, Texas & NY are top 10 with California having a slightly higher GDP than Japan for #3. So #4 overall.

It’s a meaningless comparison, though, because if you include parts of the US on the list, why not parts of other countries? Or conglomerations of countries, for that matter: Where would the EU stack up?
The EU as a whole would rank second. If you added in the UK it would still rank second. If you limit it to countries using the Euro it would probably rank third.

That is roughly 830,000 million USD so not on the list, but I thought London was suppose to be about half of the UK’s GDP, so I’m surprised the number was that low. I guess that factoid I learned was incorrect.
