I was reading the above lines on page 279 of the titled above. It’s a detective story, taking place in an America where the Confederates won the Civil War. Wait, that’s every book of his.
Wait, no, that’s true, but it’s a side detail. The main point is, while the culture strongly resembles our own, magic is real there, and used just how we use everyday technology. It‘s an interesting detective novel, despite some minor disagreements I have with the book. I am frustrated by the part I have quoted above. It is obviously a reference to some story from WWII, behind German lines. But which story? One of his past books? A book he is a fan of? Real life? A movie?
Not so much a story from WWII, but a movie set then: The Dirty Dozen. Fun, if not particularly believable. It may be based on a real raid, I don’t know. I just don’t think so, and never particularly cared enough to find out.
