Nobody picked Chet Helms.
I should change my username to Nobody so I can get all these points.
[QUOTE=Sternvogel]
Guess it’s a sign of my age that I know Fiedler as Mr. Peterson of The Bob Newhart Show, and that I remember Paul “Tigger” Winchell as the host of a kids’ game show called Runaround.
QUOTE]
I always think of Fiedler as Jack the Ripper on Star Trek.
Nobody picked writer and historian Shelby Foote.
Luther Vandross has died. Certainly somebody had him on their list.
I believe I did. If I didn’t I still think I deserve credit because I meant to put him on my list.
Ummm, no, fruitbat. Sorry.
With the death of Luther Vandross, we welcome to the scoreboard HelloKitty, who gets a very respectable 46 points! This is a unique pick.
Nobody picked Oscar Brown, Clancy Eccles, Domino Harvey, or Lon McCallister.
Say! Since it’s the first of the month, why don’t we do an updated scoreboard? Let’s see now…
Only one person had Vandross? That is surprising.
With the year half over, as of July 1 the scoreboard stands thusly:
Rachm Qoch still holds a commanding lead with 140 points.
LilyoftheValley is in second place with 86 points.
plnnr follows closely in third with 80 points.
amarone

Renaldo “Obie” Benson, who recorded such hits as “I Can’t Help Myself” and “Baby I Need Your Loving” as a member of the Four Tops, has died at the age of 69. (Linked page also features access to obituary of Luther Vandross.)
Hank Stram, former Chiefs head coach, passed on. He was one of the more entertaining head football coaches that have graced an NFL sideline.
James Stockdale has died.
That debate left such a bad taste in my mouth that I’ve never recovered from it, politically. Stockdale was a lamb led to slaughter and I hated it.
Grr. I’m still mad.
Oh my God, he had Alzheimer’s? That makes it even more horrible to think about that debate.
From what I remember of that debate, it doesn’t suprise me to hear he had Alzheimers. He looked like he was out of it the whole time.
Hell, Stockdale spent 7.5 years as a POW in solitary confinement and was repeatedly tortured. No one deserves that. RIP.
Hell, I voted for the Perot/Stockdale ticket after watching the VP debate. The man didn’t have Alzheimer’ then, you know, and he gave clear, pithy answers to questions, whereas Gore and Quayle were smarmy, packaged politicians.
When asked his position on abortion rights, he simply stated “I believe that what a woman does with her own body is her business, period.” When the debate moderator acted surprised at the short, clear, honest answer, expecting more hot air, he repeated the word “Period!”
Isn’t that a guy you could have voted for? And as for those who said he looked uncomfortable on stage, well, try having your leg broken in a POW camp, and you’d probably still be aching. Same thing for the hearing aid. Why did people I knew back then snicker at that?
After seeing an article on Medal of Honor winners I wrote to him, a short note of appreciation, and asked, if he cared to, to send me an autograph. I of course supplied a card, and an SASE. I got a lovely reply from him, and the requested autograph. That was about 7 or 8 years ago. I’ll treasure it always.
And BTW, I had him in the Death Pool.
Baker
Nice posting and tribute.
Yes, I saw that debate too and I felt he did not do as poorly as others have said that he did. (Not just Dopers but commentators, pundits, etc).
I remember Stockdale being asked that, given his lack of political experience, what would qualify him to be Vice President (and / or President).
He gave another one of those honest, no holds barred answers. I forget the exact wording but his answer was something like “I was a prisoner of war for 7 years. During that time I had to be the leader of a group of men under the harshest of circumstances. Having experienced those extreme conditions, I think I could handle anything that might arise in a political capacity”.
Like his answer on abortion, his response was met with stunned silence. Again, it gave the impression (as Baker said) that Stockdale was a guy you could vote for.
RIP Jim Stockdale.
Writer Evan Hunter, a/k/a Ed McBain has died. He was going to be my #1 pick for 2006, as I knew he was very sick with cancer.
I will miss him more than I can say.
I never knew any of that about Stockdale. He really must have been a good person.
