Pete Newell, who gained fame as a coach and teacher of basketball, has died at the age of 93. Newell was the first man to snare the “triple crown” of guiding a National Invitation Tournament champion (1949 University of San Francisco Dons), NCAA titlist (1959 University of California Golden Bears), and Olympic gold medal squad (1960 Team USA). In later years, he became known for his Big Man’s and Tall Women’s camps, which improved the skills of dozens of post players.
There was no formal comment from U.S. but one senior U.S. official said “there is good reason to believe this guy is no longer around.”

However, the news also made the Yahoo! site. Interesting that Breed’s age is given as 37 in the story I linked, while yours claimed he was 36.
ETA: Wikipedia places his birth “ca. 1972”.
It is shocking that one so young should die.
