In Kim’s case it was political. The objective evidence is that he was born in 1941. But Kim Il-sung and family were still living in the Soviet Union in 1941. It wouldn’t due to have the future Beloved Leader born in a foreign country. So the official North Korean records show that Kim Jong-il was born in 1942 after the family had supposedly returned to Korea.
Others have already posted other cites. I would not have gone with Wikipedia alone. I checked a few major news sources and decided there was sufficient evidence of uncertainty when the New York Times stated “The North has indicated he was 69 years old, but scholars have said he could have been a year older.”
When I googled it, all I found saying he was 70 was Wikipedia and sites that mirror Wikipedia such as answers.com. However, others were more successful in finding other cites, and I will accept the ruling. Not that I had much choice :).
