The chances of anything coming from Mars are a million to one, they said

What examples are there of people using the phrase “a million to one”? I’m looking for fictional examples. I’m guessing it’s mainly SF (and a few 70’s concept albums  )

Frank Costanza at the protologist’s.

That was Kramer.

I know that because I just went to IMDB and did a search on Quotes for “million to one.” There’s a whole bunch of examples there.

Ren Hoek: What are the chances of there ever being a fire? Why, it’s a meelion to one!

A bit of dialog from Terry Prachett’s Guards, Guards novel, between two members of the Nightwatch.Colon: “So it’d only work if it’s your actual million-to-one chance.”
Nobby: “I suppose that’s right.”
Colon: “So 999,943-to-one, for example–”
Carrot: “Wouldn’t have a hope. No-one ever said ‘It’s a 999,943-to-one chance but it might just work.’”

And I thought this was the Jeff Wayne appreciation thread.

“Million to one chances happen nine times out of ten.”

There used to be a British sitcom called Chance in a Million starring Brenda Blethyn and Simon Callow, about this man (Tom Chance) whose life was full of unlikely events and coincidences. It was a great show, I always thought.

“A million-to-one odds on the Earth’s alternate masters.”, from the blurb to Frank Herbert’s Green Brain, as quoted by Neil Gaiman and Kim Newman inGhastly Beyond Belief: The Science Fiction And Fantasy Book Of Quotations. They go on to comment, “What the blurb writer is trying to say - I think - is that there are a lot more insects than people.”

“Great shot, kid, that was one in a million!” - Han Solo

Pretty close.

The Professor told Gilligan in one ep of “Gilligan’s Island” that the chances of [something which I do not recall] were “a million to one.” Gilligan replied, “That’s better than a million to nothing!”
