You are marooned on a desert island. The only other things on the island are ten chickens and ten corn plants.
Your goal: Stay alive for as long as possible.
How do you do it?
Does corn *grow * in the desert?
It does in the Dark Tower Universe. 
For at least the first year keep the chickens away from the corn, and replant in the spring, in the mean time resign yourself to living on eggs [unless one of those chickens is a rooster]
FWIW, it takes about 1 bushel of seed corn to plant an acre, which in turn produces [iirc, it has been a few years] 300 bushels of corn. If you dry the corn and use it to cook in liquid, you can grind the corn into masa using a pair of stones, and make tortillas [extracting the salt from the sea water] A chicken needs to be about 26 weeks old to dependaly lay an egg 5 days out of 7, so call it 6 eggs a day plus once the corn has reached a suitable level 6 ears of corn a day. And prepare to be very bored…
Chickens dont actually need supplimental grain if there is other plant and insect life around, but they do need adequate water, 10 chickens is about a gallon/4 liters a day. If you get lucky enough to have a rooster, tye together a quick brooding coop of about a meter by a meter by a meter, and let the rooster cover all the hens and collect 2 days worth of eggs and make one of the hens set them in the coop. once they are hatched out and large enough to run around on their own[call it about a month] you can let them out. It takes about 12 weeks before they are large enough to start eating, so about every secong month repeat the process and you can have a chicken a week to eat as meat. If you have 1 acre of corn planted, you can feed the chickens the equivalent of a bushel of corn per 10 chickens each week without much problem.
I wonder if it’s possible to weave tiny rope out of corn. Cause if you could, you could make fishing rope out of the corn and use chicken bones as the hooks, and chicken as the bait.
There’s sure to be other plants you could make rope out of, like Yucca. And you could use insects for the bait. The hook would be the problem, unless you could make it out of a “woody” part of a plant… Or a “thorn”?
Another idea, save the bones of the creatures you kill trying to eat your chickens or steal your eggs, like snakes, or coyotes type critters. 
Use them to make a hook for fishing. Also, why not use their flesh as bait, if you can’t eat it yourself? I’m sure there would be plants around that you could use to make textiles as well.
Kill one of the chickens in a voodoo ritual in which you cast a spell to cause a boat to sail to the island.
Until the boat arrives, use the remaining chickens for depraved sexual pleasure.
