The Cleveland Browns march to 0-16 thread

I believe he worked with the Browns when Belichick was coach. His last job was with Oakland, which would tarnish anyone’s NFL resume.

The Jets were absolutely not awful when Mangini arrived. They’ve been pretty good since Parcells took over in the late 90s, though the occasional season ending injury to the starting QB understandably torpedoed a couple seasons. Other than that, they were always above average/decent. Mangini maintained that for a couple seasons before shitting all over them with his game-time incompetence in the second half of last season, for which he was rightfully fired.

Why the Browns felt pressure to sign Mangini days after he was fired by the Jets is the great mystery that will likely never be answered.

This is fun. There’s a rumor circulating that GM George Kokinis was escorted out of the team’s HQ today, in direct contradiction to an ESPN story that Lerner wasn’t go to make any changes.

If Marty Schottenheimer isn’t senile, get him in here.

(As of yet unconfirmed) Brown’s GM George Kokinis Fired?
In a seemingly desperate attempt to elevate the play of any of his QB’s Brown’s coach Eric Mangini reportedly has began a demonstration style of teaching, modeling proper throwing technique for Brady Quinn and Derick Anderson by throwing his putative General Manager under the bus to begin the bye week. While Anderson admired the touch and timing of the throw Quinn seemed more impressed that Kokinis traveled more than about ten yards down Lou Groza boulevard. While Mangini’s physical prowess in the demonstration impressed both QB’s both noted later that the bus Mangini threw Kokinis under, unlike any Brown’s receiver, was able to gain separation from the defender and was only single covered.

Very funny!!!

Still not official, but beingreportedby more outlets.

Ernie Accorsi is now the GM of the Browns. (again)

Huh.

Well, that may not be true. Local paper jumped on an unsubstantiated rumor apparently.

Eh, just pick from among the local tradesmen. There must be tons of unemployed people in Cleveland right now, and it’s not like any of them won’t be an improvement.

There are conflicting reports regarding this situation, the Morning Journal is standing by their story from last night that Ernie Accorsi will be the new Brown’s GM. While the Plain Dealer is reporting that Accorsi is happily retired:

Adding to the confusion WKYC reported on air that Accorsi will be brought in to groom former Brown’s QB Bernie Kozar to eventually take over the GM position himself. WKYC currently doesn’t have that story on their website and the PD article linked above dismisses this rumor as well.

Eric Mangini held a scheduled press confrence this morning, made a perfunctory statement regarding the firing of George Kokinis then refused to field questions about it.

The Indians won the 1948 World Series shortly after adopting that logo (in 1946 or '47), and the Browns won many championships shortly after that too, so that’s not it.

(Note the big grin smiley has the same bright toothy smile as the Indians’ logo does. )
As for the upcoming Browns’ fans walkout protest, it appears that some Redskins’ fans have a much better and more clever idea: Fire Synder Sign.

That would be a good hire. Most people think he overpaid for Eli, but everyone pretty much agrees that he built a rock solid foundation for the team to build on for years to come. The only non-EA players on the Superbowl team in 2007 were Strahan, Toomer, the 2007 rookies, plus maybe two or three journeymen free agents.

I would be surprised if he came out of retirement, though.

Overpaying for Eli doesn’t seem to have affected the Giants’ depth much. Hell, arguably the strength of the team is that their worst starters are much better than other teams’ worst guys. There aren’t two players on the team that I’d put in the top 5 at their positions.

I guess when you hit on fifth- and seventh- round picks every year you can afford to give up a whole draft.

Hardcore EA apologists also argue that the Eli deal meant the Giants didn’t have to tie up a huge amount of money in a top 12 pick the following year. (Chargers spent it on Merriman.) This gave Ernie the ability to bring in Plaxico Burress, Antonio Pierce, Kareem Mackenzie, Kendrick Clancy and Jay Feely all in that single offseason.

I am one such apologist.

I am deeply conflicted.
I grew up in Wisconsin, but I love my nephew.

Er… that game happened 2 weeks ago. Conflict averted.

I am rooting for the Packers to beat my Buccaneers. No interest in symbolic victories here.

With Tampa Bay winning, we may be back to being the worst team in the league.

Mangini has decided who will be starting QB next week, but has not told the QBs themselves and will not announce it until Wednesday. That worked well last time.

Yep - we didn’t use the bye week to give starter reps to whoever is starting the next week. We’ve decided the super secret HAHA YOU DON’T KNOW WHICH SHITTY QB WILL BE STARTING! tactics are just too good to pass up.

Actually I’m jumping the gun on that conclusion. I think teams tend to take vacations on bye weeks so there weren’t reps to miss.
