The Colbert Report in Iraq

No kidding. With his glasses he comes off really unflatteringly geeky looking, especially in a room full of soldiers.

More or less whenever you are not indoors or in formation. Provided they are black framed without logos.

I think they probably really appreciated him giving it ago, climbing up the wall, even just going through training for a larf. “Does this make my butt look big?”
Now Joe Biden and Sarah Palin have checked in. And I liked Bush Sr’s (“This Stephen Colbert better have nice legs!”) I highly doubt W. Bush will appear - considering how much Stephen pissed him off at the correspondence dinner.

I liked his little cow-exfoliating puff - anyone know where I can get one?
And I thought those songs were called, “cadences?”

Am I the only one that thought the interview with the Arab-American soldier was a bit… weird?

“I’m here to destroy America’s enemies and fix the reputation of Arab-Americans!”

It seemed odd at first, but it’s one guy’s motivation for enlisting. I’m not going to ask that they all be angels, or otherwise have pure reasons for signing up, as long as they don’t let it drive their actions to their and their squad’s detriment.

Besides, it’s not that crazy, really. I’m skeptical when he says that Muslim discrimination was okay after 9/11, but there was definitely a lot of anti-Muslim sentiment because of the actions of a few radicals. When you’re in the position of getting the blame by proxy, I think going into the military to try to get at the SOBs who deserve the blame while simultaneously showing that you are a patriotic American who’ll put your life on the line for your country is a hell of a lot more constructive than lashing out at fellow citizens who are being dicks.

So far as I know this was the first time McCain’s had anything to do with his old stomping grounds at Colbert Report or Daily Show since long before the election. I did notice he didn’t mention Colbert’s name: I wonder if he knew whose show it was going to be on.

Must admit I thought the Tom Hanks bit was really silly though.

Did anyone else notice that none of the soldiers laughed at Sarah Palin’s feeble joke?

I didn’t think it was too bad, actually. When I heard his head was shaved, I figured he would look the way he did when he played the Romulan character, so this was an improvement. I thought his ears would look huge.

The soldiers definitely appreciate the effort he’s making. And the Tom Hanks bit was extremely silly - I don’t know if the crowd was into it, but I really liked watching Hanks play along with that ridiculousness.

I liked the Tom Hanks bit. It reminded me of the days when Tom Hank made me laugh.

I’m not sure what to make of the Tom Hanks bit. I get the feeling they had a lot more fun making it than I (or the troops) did watching it. But I ended up donating $25 at USO.org (a $75 value!), so I guess it was effective.

So I assume they filmed all four shows in the same session, right? Or did they actually do each show on a different day?

The DADT stuff was right up there with his Whitehouse speech. he truly has the biggest cajones in the entire entertainment world.

Not at all in basic training - at least, not when I was in ('92). Of course, I was in Basic in Oklahoma in January/Fenruary, but we weren’t allowed to wear sunglasses at all (all uniforms had to be consistent, so if one person was wearing shades, everybody would have to wear them). Of course, once you get to your permanent duty station, you can wear them outdoors when not in formation, as you said.

I definitely did.

I also don’t think he looks bad with a shaved head.

Same here. Colbert and Hanks would have been ‘two helluva’ War Bond salesmen if they’d lived 65 years ago.

With Palin and others, I’m not sure how much of the audience reaction you can hear over the feed. When Obama’s message came on of course it was filmed in front of the live audience so that was different.
So who are today’s Bob Hope and The Andrews Sisters equivalents in USO tours?

I don’t think Obama’s was live, I suspect it was done in the same manner as the Even Stephen bit. You could definitely notice a difference between the different reactions though. H.W. got a pretty good one, even a little bit when he first popped up on screen. That Palin joke though, it actually sort of had me feeling bad for her son, Track(?).
That puppy was awesome, looked like it had already gotten into a few tubs of ice cream too.

I dunno, I liked Tom Hanks’s bit. Considering Hanks started out as a comedy actor, he probably doesn’t have much of a chance to be silly like that nowadays. (And c’mon, who doesn’t like puppies?)

Sarah Palin may not have been funny, but I at least give her credit for participating – I doubt our former Commander in Chimp will be putting in an appearance. (Hell, his own FATHER did)

What other politicians may show up? I’m guessing Hilary Clinton. Nancy Pelosi? Maybe John Kerry, or Colin Powell? Al Gore, possibly? (If he’s up to it, Ted Kennedy?)

(And I didn’t know Track Palin was in Iraq. Huh.)

Do you mean Formidable Opponent, with Stephen debating against himself? I’m pretty sure that’s live, they just flip the image.

Whoops, you’re right; Formidable Opponent is what I meant. I had always thought he was standing next to a screen with a recorded Colbert and just left in space for live Colbert to say his lines.

No, it’s done with two cameras at different angles. Notice how he ends each bit with a facial expression that works just as well as the starting expression of his ‘opponent.’ He’s absolutely brilliant.

And this whole string of episodes again shows him to be, as Jon Stewart said after the White House Correspondent’s Dinner appearance, ballsalicious.

I actually wish they’d pre-tape one half. Stephen isn’t very good at keeping track of both sides of the conversation at once, which makes his usually pretty good delivery come off really stilted during the formidable opponent bits.

Also, I’ve only watched two (out of four?) of the Iraq episodes, but the per-taped celebrity bits (McCain, Bush I and Clinton) have all been pretty lame. Bad delivery of pretty lame jokes. (Bush I was the best of the bunch, actually).

Fun otherwise though.
