The Colbert Report in Iraq

That was awful! You don’t think that puppy knew “NO NO BAD DOG!” was satire, do you? I did like: “Say something only Tom Hanks would say!” “WILLLSOOON!!!” And then it just went on and on…how did a half hour show last soooo long?

I have to say when I found out that $25 would go so far I felt I’d over donated; but when I saw Stevie in that jumpsuit I felt I hadn’t donated nearly enough. RAWR!! Money well spent. HOO-HA!

In all seriousness my USO donation was made in my grandpa’s name, a WWII/Korea vet and though some people (like my brother) might find me a flag-burning liberal commie pinko I have the utmost respect for people who VOLUNTARILY* defend this country and my hat is off to them.

*I think one of the aspects neglected in the “what makes this Army so great” segment was not only is our Army the top 3 percentile or whatever but that they CHOOSE to do this. They REALLY REALLY want to. They are not coerced or forced to like in other countries. (Granted you can argue some join the Army to go to school, etc but that is always a choice. No one is holding a gun to their head - it’s not a “trick.”)

I think Comedy Central should make the episodes available on a DVD with the proceeds going to the USO maybe or something? Would make a great gift to soldiers or soldier’s families.

:dubious:

Whoa whoa whoa, easy there killer. All I meant was that the actual dog itself was an adorable, chubby, ball of fur. I just liked the puppy, is all.

…but no, I also don’t think that the puppy suffered any sort of long lasting trauma over the bit either.

Sheesh.

This, however, is a very good idea.

I believe that it’s available on iTunes with proceeds going to the USO.

I have to give him props for that. (Although I’m wondering if he had to be persuaded – maybe Papa Bush threatened to cut him out the will? :D)

I THINK Carter has been on – I know he’s been on The Daily Show.

And hey – the puppy got to eat ice cream. It can’t be all bad!

He had his older brother Ed, an intellectual property lawyer, on the show to defend IP laws, and the dynamics of the family was apparent.

“OK, first off ‘Col-BERT’ or ‘Col-BEAR’?”
“Col-BERT.”
“See you in Hell.”

It’s possible that Stephen isn’t the funniest member of his family, just the one who worked hardest to get attention.

IMS, he lost his Dad and 2 brothers in a plane crash when Stephen was 11. As he said in an interview a few years ago, what was school going to do to me after that? The brothers that died were the closest to him in age, so in an odd way, despite all his sibs, he grew up (teenhood) as kind of an only child. I think that and the tragedy of the crash have more to do with his drive to entertain. Just my 2 cents. Of course, it helps to have a ready made audience to be a ham for…

Did anyone else notice that when he introduced his guests this time he didn’t ham it up himself in front of the camera, trying to attract attention to himself like he usually does?

I can just picture a bunch of soliders in the audience thinking “Christ, we have to sing this stupid song all the fucking time. I came here to do the hokey-pokey, dammit!”

I was also wondering what Voyager was referring to, so I did a search. I think he means this piece from January, in which he interviews Paul in character. (I doubt that I could remain in character if I was ever sitting across from Paul.)

As for the hokey-pokey bit, I assume that the sergeant major felt that it was undignified for the soldiers to do that on camera.

Behind the scenes taping of the Obama bit.

Awesome!

And what the fuck happened to the caissons?

I must say, I giggled at the dichotomy between the ham NCO, all “we’re gonna ROCK this place DOWN !” and the half-assed, mumble-mumble a capella hymn that followed. There was no rocking, downwards or otherwise.
