the common cold

Why is the common cold referred to as such? Is it because the cold is the most common form of disease, or to distinguish it from other, less common forms of cold?

I thought it was because there are so many different kinds of viruses that all cause the same “common” symptoms. Runny nose, fever, coughing, etc… and have no long term effects.

It’s just because everyone gets it. There are no “uncommon” colds out there, lurking in the darkness.
