The Conservatism of Boston in the 40s and 50s

A few months ago I heard a reference to libraries in Boston in the 40s and how they wouldn’t allow popular books in because they were too risquè.

Then tonight I was watching an old episode of the TV show Burns and Allen and Gracie’s getting her portrait painted. The artists suggest various poses and says something like “Well if you don’t like that dress, you could take it off.”

Gracie says “Oh I couldn’t do that, someday I’d like to visit Boston.”

So I’m assuming that somehow this relates to Boston being a bed of conservative ideas in the 40s and 50s. Was this so? If so how “conservative” was it?

Here’s some reading to get you started.
