Whatever happened to The Contract On America? Did it go away with Newt Gingrich?
It doesn’t seem to be brought up much today.
BTW, it was called the Contract with America – though there are Democratic partisans who might find your preposition to be more accurate!
Most of it was passed into law. It and welfare reform were the two biggest pieces of economic legislation enacted under Clinton. I can’t remember but welfare reform may have been part of the contract as well.
Another part of the “contract” was the idea that people shouldn’t make a career out of being in congress. Several of its proponents did not seek re-election after serving a couple of terms in the Senate or a few terms in the House.
It’s funny how no one remembers the biggest piece of economic legislation passed during Clinton’s tenure. I don’t recall what his stance on it was at the time but he deserves at least some credit (or blame if you prefer) for signing it into law on his watch.
Here are the terms of the “contract.” Judge for yourself whether the terms have been fulfilled.
Thanks for the link, Otto.
Contract on America sounds like the mafia is after us or something Jacque Chirac has up his sleeve.
The Contract On America is what Bin Laden is trying to carry out.
