The correct use of "reported"

The mod statement “I am not issuing a warning” is usually intended for clarity: no warning is issued, it is simply a “friendly reminder.” Mods do this a lot, because there are a lot of situations where a poster is being inconsiderate (for example) but it’s not serious enough for a warning.

Such statement does not imply that a warning COULD have been issued, nor does it imply that a warning COULDN’T have been issued. Typically, it’s just clarification, both for the poster (who should know that a warning wasn’t issued because they didn’t get a red flag) and for other readers (who might be confused.)

Similarly, an Official Warning is usually accompanied by the words, “Official Warning.”

How so? Please elaborate.

Because the correct response was, “No, I made the ultimate sacrifice to stop my pathetic whining for a grand total of 11 days in this thread - but I completely failed to gain anything from it like I said I’d try to do”.

For those who won’t trouble to open the link (I haven’t either), I presume Munch linked to the thread, ca. mid-December, where I resolved not to post on five subjects (including my negative opinions of Mods) for the rest of the year–this, mind you, is in defense of his mis-reading those clear words to mean that I resolved AFTER the New Year never to write about such subjects ever, ever, ever again.

I think Munch tried to hold up a convenience store with a lawyer one time, and defended himself in court with a sawed-off shotgun.

And, in fact, the post the OP is referring to is an Official Warning, but Gfactor was issuing it for calling another post threadshitting and not for saying reported, hence the distinction made. That doesn’t mean it’s not obnoxious behavior, though.

Nope, try again, coach. It’s an admission that I was incorrect that it was a New Year’s resolution. Please note the use of “11 days” (you started the thread on Dec. 20).

And not to hijack this ATMB thread with insults any further, let’s take the insults to the Pit, where I can tell you what I really think about you, Munch, okay?

Yeah, try to sell this as “an admission” of anything. LMK who’s buying–I have items I’d like to sell them.

Knock yourself out.

Hint - when people use the word “admission” it’s a pretty good indicator they’re showing where they were incorrect in their original assumption. Though I still stand by my assessment that your annoying whiny bitching is annoying and whiny.

I’ve started a discussion in the mod loop. I will share the results when they exist.

****Back to ATMB stuff–let’s look at what **gfactor **wrote to me here:

I take the first sentence to mean that the ONLY non-violative use of posting “reported” is to report spam. Is this true?

He then defines two other uses of “reported” in a post as “junior modding” and “trolling.” “Trolling,” as we know, is a Very Bad Thing and clearly a violation of the SD registration agreement, and “junior modding”–well, I just got an Official Warning in that thread for doing just that (entirely incorrectly and inappropriately, I still believe), so we all know that “junior modding” is a warnable offense. It was clear to me that **gfactor **did not give me an official warning for posting “reported” but I still don’t know if this is permissable behavior following one’s reporting of a non-spam violation. I would appreciate some guidance on this question.

After extensive investigation and research at McBrides Station I would say it depends on a combination of the density of the butt, the kicker, — and the presence or absence of jackboots. :smack:

The only reason people really say “reported” when reporting a spam topic is so mods aren’t flooded by lots of reports for one completely obvious violation that’s going to get disappeared soon (along with the reply saying “reported”). When you report other stuff, those posts probably aren’t going to disappear, nor will your reply, so there’s a different vibe to the whole thing. So saying “reported” in other circumstances does come across as jr modding or trolling.

I mean, the spammer will likely never see that you said you reported a post. But if for instance someone’s flaming up a storm and you say “reported” the flamer’s likely to see that, so you’re just going to add fuel to the flames.

At least that’s my take on the situation.

I don’t think prr’s ever seen a situation that he didn’t feel called for more fuel.
