As W Kamau Bell and Kevin Avery pointed out on their podcast episode critiquing this film, it’s only half a movie about Biko. It’s a full movie about a good-hearted white guy played by Kevin Kline. (I think they’re a bit unkind to the film, but they definitely have a point.)

I had forgotten that this is the episode where Kevin gets a free MacBook Air and Kamau gives him a ton of shit for it. This becomes a running theme in later episodes. If you just want to hear them talk shit on Cry Freedom, skip to 23:30.
There was a storyboard for it, but the full scene wasn’t filmed. See here at 7:49.
No, that was the rumor. That not only was he gay, but he was a damn gerbil stuffer. And not only was he gay, but so was Cindy Crawford. They had a dual beard marriage. That they had this whole Rock Hudson/Doris Day thing. Hey, it was the 80s, I didn’t start the rumors, I just believed them.
“The American Gerbilo”?
For approximately 30 years I was the only person who remembered the hand gesture for F— U-.
More of a misunderstanding than a glitch. I was convinced for a while that there was a Lupin I and a Lupin II movie that I’d never seen.
Well…yeah…that’s as maybe, but at the very least it’s trying to be a movie about Biko. It’s not even half a movie about Mandela though, so if it is a reason that people thought they knew Mandela was dead, I despair even more.
I’m a fan of classic movies/Old Hollywood and, swear to god, I know *that it’s Olivia de Havilland who is dead, not her sister Joan Fontaine (who is dead).
In fact, I had to look it up yet again this morning when we were having a discussion about old films. My brain just won’t let go of this.

I thought you were joking but holy shit this is an actual movie (scene you mentioned is at about 1:30 but all the obvious stock footage before that with crazy bee effects pasted over is also great)
Apologies if this was mentioned already since I haven’t looked at the other pages of this thread, but yoooooooo that clip at 1:24 was used in Airplane! during the “watching a movie” scene.
As far as I know, this one only applies to me, but you know the singer, Howard Jones? “No One is to Blame?” Anyway, I’m positive that his name used to be Howard Johnson until very recently. I distinctly remember thinking of the hotel, the Mets 3rd baseman, and the singer all being called Howard Johnson even as a kid back in the 80s. Sometime within the last year I saw he was Howard Jones and thought, no this can’t be!
When The Bangles came out with "Eternal Flame"
I was sure it was a cover of some flower child band from the late 60s/early 70s; Melanie or The Cowsills.Original song from the late 80s.
The Bees was broadcast on the “CBS Late Movie”—one of the rare times they showed an actual movie instead of old Rockford Files and McMillen and Wife episodes—so there are probably a lot of people from my generation who saw it.
The United Nations scene (with John Saxon dramatically announcing the bees’ demands) is the only thing I remember about it … well, I also recall that the bees looked suspiciously like confetti being blown around by a fan.
Reminds me of an X files episode I could have sworn I watched a month or so ago. But I guess I’m wrong, didn’t happen. ; )
I know theres a teaser trailer the alienist movie that never happened …
I’m assuming like many people, I have a clear memory of hearing them called “Ewoks”.
Well, sometimes he was nicknamed “HoJo” which, even in context, I will always parse as “Howard Johnson”, so there is that.
They are called by that name in the spin-off Ewok movies. Cindel Towani somehow determines this, even though later they learn language from her rather than the more logical other way round.
That scene was never in Star Wars as released, but he was always in the movie, during the Death Star assault. Probably adds to the confusion a little.
What was the slogan you remember? You might be conflating a different movie.
